Drama | 2017

I’m always a little hesitant when a movie is just labeled as “drama” because well they always seem either absolutely boring or absolutely annoying the entire time. For Wonder Wheel, it took the annoying frame of mind. Mickey (Justin Timberlake) is a lifeguard on Coney Island in the 50s. He is narrating the story of Humpty (Jim Belushi) and his wife Ginny (Kate Winslet) during one summer that Humpty’s daughter Carolina (Juno Temple) comes home to hide from her ex-husband, the gangster.

A lot of drama happens. Humpty is a recovering drunk. Carolina is a spoiled brat who is truly trying to be her own person. Ginny is losing her mind in an unhappy marriage, and her son is borderline psychotic. All the makings of a great drama, and it was for the most part. The story itself wasn’t bad. I just couldn’t take all the arguing and the mental breakdowns. It reminded me a lot of Before Midnight since the two main characters in that movie literally bickered the entire time.
However, if I look past that, the acting in this film is phenomenal… for Kate Winslet anyway. All the emotions that Ginny was going through we perfectly executed for the screen. Love, shame, annoyance, jealousy, etc. The film was a whirlwind (or should I say Wonder Wheel?) of emotions that I felt were felt strongly by the viewer. As the film progresses, each thing just started pushing Ginny closer and closer to the edge of insanity.

I loved the colors in this film. The scenes in their home really played off the neon lights that engulf the coney island amusement park.

As for Woody Allen, Wonder Wheel is strikingly similar to Cafe Society (when you consider the estranged love stories), but way better I’d say. I’m still going to give Wonder Wheel an “okay” rating. Even though I was thoroughly annoyed by the way each character was in the story, I can’t deny that the actors were spot on with their acting. How else would I be annoyed right? (3/5).
