The Space Between Us is about a teenage boy who is born on Mars. His mother was the lead astronaut on the first ever mission to live on Mars. After giving birth to Gardner (played by Asa Butterfield), his mother dies from complications and the remaining astronauts are left to raise him. And this is where he stays for 16 years, he grows up to be intelligent (I mean, he is raised by scientists) and wanting more out of life than his home on Mars can give him - Earth.
Because he has only ever live on Mars, his body matured much more differently than it would have on Earth. His bones are brittle, his heart is large, and he only knows how to walk on Mars' gravity. So the journey to Earth is not the best idea for health reasons. However, Kendra (the woman who is as close to a mom as he has and played by Carla Gugino) convinces NASA to allow Gardner to take the journey to Earth. When he finally arrives he is tested for so many things to ensure that his body can handle the planet. Before the answers can be known, he has had enough and decides to escape to meet his internet pen pal, Tulsa (played by Britt Robertson) and find out who is father is.
journey. Can you imagine never stepping foot on our planet? There are so many scenes were his reactions and choices of words made me laugh out loud. He was so clueless about everything and Asa played his character extremely well, as if he really was from Mars and seeing Earth's wonderful features and creatures for the first time in his life. He encounters different people, a dog, and a horse. Another thing I enjoyed throughout the movie is that Gardner asked "What's your favorite thing about Earth" many times to many people as his journey continued. And each time he is given a more emotional answer than the previous.
I would definitely recommend this movie. It has science fiction, action, romance, and adventure. There's even an explosion. I thought the acting was good and the effects were good as well. They showed both Mars and Earth from space and it was beautiful, just as the scenery shots as Tulsa and Gardner are traveling through Colorado. Now I want to take a trip to Colorado, can someone make that happen? I'm going to give this movie "Liked It" rating and I urge everyone to go to the theaters on December 16 to watch it! It's not just about the romance like I originally thought, it is a fun adventure. I leave you with one question, what's your favorite thing about Earth?
