Stars: Emmanuel Garjo, Tom Hudson, Barbara Beretta Director: Michael Dudok de Wit Runtime: 1 hour, 20 minutes Animation | Fantasy | 2016 I’ve heard some things about this film that left me interested yet scared to actually watch it. The thing I heard before, back when this film was originally released, was that he had sex with a turtle. Okay, I guess you can say that, but it’s not as weird as I expected. A man is shipwrecked on a deserted island. He builds raft after raft to try and escape his loneliness, and each time the large red turtle destroys his raft leaving him on the island infinitely. Well, needless to say he is super pissed off at this turtle and some things happen on the island… SPOILERS He kills the turtle. After awhile, he starts to feel guilty about killing the turtle, and the turtle turns into a beautiful woman. They fall in love, have a baby, and live their lives on the tiny island. The baby and the mother swim with the turtles all the time, like they have a bond or something. END SPOILERS The story is interesting, but I just don’t know if he is delusional or if magic really happens. It’s confusing to me. I almost thought it was like Wilson in Cast Away, but I’m not so sure that’s the case. I’m going to go with Magic on this one, because I like that. There is pretty much no dialogue. But I enjoyed the music that accompanied the animated story. Even though there wasn’t anything said, I could still feel all the feelings that each character had. I’m going to go with an “okay” on this film. The animation reminded me of Spirited Away, which I still am super confused about as well, but overall I thought the story was good and the ending was happy (in a sense). (3/5).
