Runtime: 2 hours, 4 minutes

I know for a fact that I watched this film when I was younger, but watching it now for Monster Movie Month, I can’t tell you with confidence that I remembered a single thing about it. The Mummy takes place in Egypt (what do ya know?) as they try to find the ancient city of Hamunaptra, a city with a legend that it’s full of gold and riches. What the legend doesn’t tell you though, is the mummy buried inside the tomb of Hamunaptra.

Brendan Fraser plays Rick O’Connell, a thief who has been to the lost city before and is recruited by a couple of archaeologists to assist them in finding the city. Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) and Jonathan (John Hannah) start their journey to find relics and artifacts.

Along the way, there’s a group of masked men who try to stop them. It’s not because of the riches, but because of the mummy. They are protecting the city from what could happen if he is awakened. Needless to say, he becomes awakened and the mummy is played by Arnold Vosloo.
For the most part, this film is similar to both the 2017 version of The Mummy and the 1932 version of The Mummy. In comparison to the original 1932 version, he is awakened by someone reading the spell/scripture and wants to bring his bride back from the dead. Evelyn is the subject to be sacrafice, similar to that in the original version. As far as comparing this one to the newest version, it would mostly have to do with how the mummy himself gets back to normal i.e. eating people’s souls to gather more skin, tissue, and cartilage to form the proper body. That and the demonic magical tendencies that the antagonist has.

I thought this film was great. It had just enough thrills in the story and just enough romance as well. I’m going to give this film a “Liked It” rating. Fraser and Weisz worked great together in the leading roles, and the fight scenes were entertaining enough. (4/5)
