The Long, Hot Summer is based off William Faulkner's book with the same title. It follows a young woman, Clara, whose father owns most of the town in which they live and her family. Soon a newcomer, Ben Quick (Paul Newman), arrives in their little country town and everything changes. Mr. Varner becomes infatuated with Ben, enough to the point that he wants him to marry his daughter. The two men form a business relationship that is undeniable, that forms tension within the family and the city. Paul Newman did awesome in this movie, really selling the fact that he wants to make a name for himself and trying to change from what his family's reputation gives him. I also really loved Eula Varner, her enthusiasm and confidence just made me happy during the entire movie. "Jody.. I am home and I spent all your money!" What a lady. Mr. Varner's character made me mad the entire time. The way he treated his children was completely horrible the entire movie. Putting down Jody every chance he got, and trying to force marriage on Clara. That's not how a father should treat his children. He even treated his "girlfriend" like this, but she wasn't putting up with any of that! Angela Lansbury plays Mittie, Varner's girl, and she was just hilarious and strong-minded. It was a little karma for him, since she in turn forces marriage on him. I just love Angela Lansbury, watching Murder She Wrote was something my dad and I did everyday when I was younger.
