The moment I saw the runtime on this movie I knew I was done for... 3.5 hours? It's one thing to be a movie like Green Mile or Endgame, where for the entire runtime there's something interesting to watch on screen or explosions or both, but for THIS movie to have that long of a runtime... it was excruciating. First off, I have never really liked crime/mob boss movies. I don't know why, I guess because they are more on the dramatic side than the crime side - there's no mystery. The Irishman, for lack of better words, but SO. BORING.
The film stars Robert de Niro as the main character and basically is about his life. From the the start of his crime career to the bitter end. That's it. I'm sure I've said this before on other movie reviews, but I really can't stand movies that are solely about one's life, where there is really no plot at all other than living and then dying. I understand that this is supposed to be a biography, but I feel like it should have focused more on Jimmy Hoffa than the actual main character. And did I miss the reasoning behind the title? It wasn't just because of the ring that his friend gave him was it? I mean.. it was about the ITALIAN mob. No one was even Irish *insert rolling eyes emoji.*
In all honesty, I'm not really sure why this film is up for an Oscar nomination for best picture. I couldn't tell you that the acting in this film stuck out over any of the other films. Yes, there are a lot of brilliant actors in this film bringing the "story" to life, but I wouldn't say anything spectacular like other movies I've seen up for best picture.
The film is nominated for the following Academy Awards:
I give 2/5 stars just because of the actors, but I would never watch this again nor would I recommend it to people who like to watch movies for the entertainment. ✩ ✩
