I am not the biggest fan of The Guardian. I wasn't the first time I watched it, and my original opinions have not changed after the second time. This movie follows young men who are trying to make it through the Coast Guard academy. Jake (Ashton Kutcher) is the star of the group, he is full of himself and pushes back on the instructors every chance he gets. Ben (Kevin Costner) is the lead instructor of the group. He is a seasoned Coast Guard rescuer who is struggling with losing a best friend, his wife leaving him, and the fact that they are forcing him to teach this class. So when Jake challenges his authority, and his records, Ben has a hard time keeping his cool. The majority of the movie is them in training, growing with each other, and becoming a team. The way they are trained seems extremely vigorous, but ultimately I'm sure that there is some truth to it. I mean, they have to risk their lives swimming in the ocean to save others. What heroes they will be! Of course, Jake finds a woman so there is a little bit of romance thrown in there. After all the training and schooling is complete, the few left graduate. And this is where the movie starts to go downhill for me. Once Jake and Ben are back at work rescuing stranded sailors or fisherman, it's just way too stressful for me to watch. Especially since they could easily drown.
