With a movie starring Matt Damon, I’m assuming that you all would think that I’d give it a loved it rating. Well, that will not be the case this time. The Great Wall tells us the myth of the Great Wall of China (which I’m assuming is an actual myth, but I guess they could have just made it up for the movie’s sake). In this film, the wall was built to protect the capitol from beastly creatures that eat humans. Every 60 years these creatures come out of “hibernation” to try to break into the capitol. How doe’s Matt Damon get involved? Well, he is imprisoned in the wall and ends up being an ally in the fight to save humanity. Now, there were some cool parts of the film. The colors of the wall warriors clothing and the ballet type movements were great. It had the feeling somewhat like Hero. And I liked that the general was a woman. And all the ancient machines i.e. elevator and balloons were cool. But everything else kind of falls flat. We have a side story of the english men trying to steal something from the warriors and escape (Willem Dafoe and Pedro Pascal). The way the creatures were portrayed were disgusting looking and the fact that they were eating just to feed their queen, gross. Reminds me of How to Train Your Dragon minus the whole sweet and cute factor. This movie was gruesome. Not so much on the human side (though there were some parts), but the way they were taking down the creatures was awful. If it wasn’t for the fact that they were evil, I would have felt bad for them. The cut them in half with scissor type blades, stabbed them in the eye (which is apparently the best way to kill them?), and burned them alive. They evolved over time so not much can stop them. You know what their kryptonite is? A magnet. Um… what? A magnet. That’s stupid right?
Overall, this movie had a story that just wasn’t good. Guy gets imprisoned and helps the warriors defend the city from evil creatures that want to eat everyone. I don’t use the term stupid that much, but yeah... Because of all the action and explosions I’m still going to give this film an “okay” rating, however I don’t recommend it at all.
