Starring: Hailee Steinfeld, Woody Harrelson, Kyra Sedgwick
Director: Kelly Fremon Craig
Runtime: 1 hour, 44 minutes
Comedy | Drama | 2016

There is little about this film that I liked. Hailee Steinfeld plays Nadine, a misunderstood teenager that feels like the world and God are against her. Typical for a movie based on teenage angst. She is not popular, she has only one friend, and she eats lunch with her favorite teacher. Sounds pitiful right? Well, that’s the gist of what this movie is based on.

She lost her father when she was 13 and her mother just can’t handle life. Her brother is the wonderboy of the school and her life starts to fall apart when he dates her only and best friend. The film goes on to have more and more bad things happen to her, which are trivial for a teenager.
Woody Harrelson is probably the only character I actually liked during the film. His role as the teacher with a nonchalant attitude is perfect for the film. Though he comes off as a man who doesn’t really care about his students, it’s evident that he cares for Nadine and wants her to no be so depressed all the time. Their relationship is a strange one, but sets the tone for the whole film.

I personally didn’t find anything else amusing in this film. Most of the scenes with Erwin were fun and entertaining, but when Nadine was alone and sulking it just wasn’t doing anything for me. I would have hoped for a better love story than that.

I’m going to give this film a “hated it” there really wasn’t anything special about it and I would not watch it again or recommend it. I’m not sure whether Hailee Steinfeld got her start in singing or acting, but I think she should stick to singing because her music makes me want to dance. Guess I’ll have to watch her again when we go to the trilogy of Pitch Perfect in January. Great.
