Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Michael Sheen, Pico Alexander
Director: Hallie Meyers-Shyer
Runtime: 1 hour, 37 minutes
Comedy | Drama | Romance | 2017

Reese Witherspoon is back in the romantic comedy world. Home Again tells you a story about a single mom who just moved back to Los Angeles that is trying to cope with leaving her husband and moving across the country. This film is not as great as Sweet Home Alabama with how Reese Witherspoon and romantic comedies work. But it’s not as bad as This Means War.

Yes, there are some small humor lines thrown into the script here and there, but I’d say most of them weren’t delivered by Reese herself. For me, her children, mother, and the three young men living in her house brought most of the comedy to screen.

Frankly, I miss all the romantic comedies from the early 2000's. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Sweet Home Alabama, Leap Year, to name a few that I love. All the same and all in my wheelhouse. Home Again though is different. It doesn’t have the comedy like the new comedies do these days, it’s sweet and cute and I liked it, but the storyline just was completely different from what I would expect.

Alice (Reese) meets a man that is over 15 years younger than her and for the most part falls in love. But life happens. Her husband returns and she still has her two lovely daughters to worry about. The bounds between all the characters was undeniable for sure, and that is one thing that this movie has going for it. The three friends starting to become a father-like figure to the girls and Alice having a somewhat mother-like attitude towards the three guys living in her house (with the exception of Harry obviously).

The place where the movie fell short for me was the ending. I won’t spoil it for you in case you really, really want to see this film, but it wasn’t my favorite ending to a movie dubbed as a “romantic comedy.” I’m going to give Home Again an “okay” rating (2/5). I’m not sure I would suggest it to see in theaters, this may be a - wait till its out to DVD - type of movie. It’s definitely cute, I’ll give it that much, but nothing special.
