Going into this screening, I knew only a few things about Rampage. That is starred Dwayne Johnson and that it was about genetically altered animals wreaking havoc on a city. Sounds interesting enough for me to put my butt in a theater seat, but I was a little wary as to the content of the film and if it would even be a good plot. Well, let me just start off by saying, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.
The movie itself starts off in space, with an astronaut fighting for her life as some unknown creature destroys the space station and kills everyone on board. Well, the scientist that created the pathogen makes the woman take the specimen with her in the escape pod, only to blow up and fall down to Earth.
Dwayne Johnson plays Davis, a primatologist working in the San Diego and his best friend is an albino Gorilla named George. LIke I just mentioned, these specimens (I’m probably using the wrong word here, but can’t seem to think of a better one) fell to Earth (three of them to be exact) and one of them came into contact with George. The other two fell in Wyoming and in Florida in case you were curious.
Needless to say, these brick looking things are filled with a genetic editing pathogen that leaves animals ruthless, dangerous, and ever growing.
The film is a non-stop action filled movie with tons of comedic one liners that I felt were perfect. Though it’s rated PG-13, I would say it’s a little too graphic for the small children that were in the movie theater. People getting eaten, smashed, etc… a lot of times it was a gory mess.
A couple things that I liked about the film. 1) At one point, they were at Scott Air Force Base, which is in my neck of the woods over here in St. Louis Metro Area. There was also a scene from a camp somewhere in Missouri, I always love when Missouri is on the big screen because it doesn’t happen too often. Although we did have a great year at the Oscars! LOL.
2) The three genetically altered animals pretty much destroyed Chicago. I’m sorry, but I hate Chicago and felt this was great to watch. Particularly because I thought the special effects were just wonderful, I would never wish this on Chicago in real life! The animals and their specific enhancements were interesting to watch on screen, particularly during the epic fight in the climax of the film.
3) Dwayne Johnson and Naomie Harris are great in the lead roles. The plot was well thought out and I really liked the whole science fiction aspect of the story line. I really liked Jeffrey Dean Morgan in his role, him having the most comedic lines and it being greatly timed in the dialogue between other characters.
Malin Akerman played the villain in this film, and it was a little hard for me to believe this. I’ve only seen here in a few things, most often 27 Dresses, so yeah.
And one more thing… at this screening they showed a couple trailers. WHY was Life part of these trailers? This movie came out last year. At first I thought maybe the made a sequel, because of how that awful film ended, but it was legit for the film that came out last year. My only speculation is that Rampage was supposed to come out sooner than it actually did. Does anyone know? Just curious.
Overall, I really enjoyed this film. It was a mix between Jurassic World and Godzilla I would say. It gets a “Loved It” from me. Oh and just so you know, it’s based off an arcade game from the 80s that I’ve heard Johnson frequently played (5/5).
