Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Liked It

Well then. After the ending of the last film, I wasn’t sure how they were going to keep the franchise going. Honestly, I think they should have stopped, but that doesn’t deter from the fact that this movie still isn’t bad. Pretty much, Jack Sparrow is the only main character left (other than Captain Barbossa and a couple crew members from the Black Pearl), and we replace Knightley with Penelope Cruz who also acts as the love interest for the story. And I’m a little upset that we don’t get to see the child of Elizabeth and Will.

Basically, Captain Blackbeard is trying to find the Fountain of Youth and his daughter, Angelica (Penelope Cruz) tricks Jack into being part of the adventure. Along the way, Captain Barbossa and his crew of the King’s Men are also trying to find the fountain. As well as an armada of Spaniards. So three groups are venturing for the same thing.

One thing that makes this movie a little different than the others is the magic. Yes, I know there were some magic in the previous films i.e. Calypso and the curses, but this one is pure magic as we know it. Captain Blackbeard’s sword is what drives his ship and he can do anything he wants really. Take down the sails, tie people up with ropes, etc. There are also mermaids, who are evil apparently (I don’t like this) and there is a second love story - FINNICK ODAIR (a.k.a Sam Claflin) is in this!
Overall, I thought the adventure was fun in this film. I hated Blackbeard the entire time, but then again he is the antagonist so I guess that’s how I’m supposed to feel. The backbone of the storyline is getting a bit old though, I must say. Starts off with Jack running from someone, then he ends up on a ship that’s not his own, working with the enemy to get what he wants, and then eventually coming out on top of it all. I thought the Fountain of Youth was a bit of a stretch for a pirate movie - this film of the series feels the least “pirate” to me - but I am sure that this was a big thing back then when the stereotypical pirate was sailing the seas. I’m still going to give this film a “Liked It” though. Jack was hilarious as usual and I’d like to see more of this love story between him and Angelica, but I don’t think Cruz is in the next movie, sad day.

oh yeah, and that peg leg... awesome
