Here we are folks, the final day of Pirates Weeks and the final day of the Pirates of the Caribbean series – and also, I believe the final movie all together. For this particular movie were are shown the past of Jack Sparrow, the son of Elizabeth and Will, and a few new characters that make the movie great. Honestly, I think this one is my favorite out of the whole thing and that the 4th one didn’t need to be made. But hey, this is Disney, they are going to make movies that don’t need to be made. Anyways, Dead Men Tell No Tales starts us off on the island of St. Martin were A) there is a young woman, Carina (Kaya Scodelario), about to be hanged for being a witch B) Jack and the crew are robbing a bank and then across the ocean we have Henry Turner (Brenton Thwaites) on a ship that is sailing into the triangle – a place where no ship ever returns. In the triangle, we are introduced to Captain Salazaar (Javier Bardem) of the Spanish fleet. He has revenge on his mind thanks to Jack Sparrow and sends Henry after him for the compass. Yes, that dang compass is still the center of a Pirates of the Caribbean story. But in this film we learn more about it than in any movie. We all know that the compass points Jack to his greatest desire, but in this film we learn of how he obtained the compass and what happens when you betray it. Per usual, this movie starts with a chase scene; three different ships all wanting the same thing; Barbossa and Jack’s friendly fued; and then Jack doing the right thing in the end. Henry wants the trident to break the curse of his father on the Flying Dutchman. Carina wants to find the trident to become closer to the father she doesn’t know. Salazaar wants to kill Jack and break the curse of his people with the trident. Barbossa wants to rule the seas and take down Salazaar. And Jack… I think he just wants to be back on the sea with his beloved Black Pearl. Some things I liked about this movie:
I liked the effects of the crew of Salazaar – they were ghosts, their ship were ghosts, and the animals on board were ghosts. The sharks were pretty cool, but what was with Salazaar’s hair? It was always floating, even when he wasn’t in the water. It reminded me of KISS or something. And that ghost ship, it was a freaking cannibal. How do people come up with this? I love it. I liked that the entire voyage Carina was able to use the stars as her map and I loved her personality through the whole thing as well – especially the slap. I liked the love story between Carina and Henry. But most importantly, I loved the scenes as they were about to find the trident. That sea was split just like I can assume it was when Moses split the Red Sea. I loved the scene with the anchor the best. Last but not least, this movie was tied up with a bow in the end, both for the film and for the franchise. I don’t see them making anymore after this. Overall, this movie was great. I loved every second of it therefore I give it a “Loved It.” I especially liked that Orlando Bloom returns as Will Turner, and we see Keira Knightley in the end as well. I definitely recommend this and thought it was the perfect movie to end the franchise.
