I remember when this movie came out, it was such a big blockbuster. I don’t however remember a whole lot that happened in the movie, watching it only once 14 years ago. So I’m excited for this Pirates month thing, getting to catch up on all the POC movies and then seeing the brand new one! I would imagine most of you have seen this film, but I’ll go into the normal movie review spiel just in case. Curse of the Black Pearl is the first film in the POC series, which this year has 5 total movies. It starts us off with a good character development and information.

Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow (I remember this was the first movie I am aware of knowing who Johnny Depp was, even though I know he was famous before this happened), who is a pirate, duh. He comes to shore on a british civilization and ends up in trouble, which I would say is normal for him. Orlando Bloom plays Will Turner, who we find out in this film is the son of an infamous pirate that is ultimately the reason for the curse. And then we have Keira Knightley, who also I had no idea who she was before this movie. Since then though I’ve grown to love
Pride & Prejudice. She plays Elizabeth Swann, a privileged young woman who secretly (?) loves Will, but will end up marrying someone of her own status, presumably.

The basis of this movie is pirates searching for the cure to their curse. Along with the British men searching for Elizabeth who was taken by pirates, as well as Will and Sparrow who may or may not have the same thoughts on why they are making the voyage to save Elizabeth. I love the actors/actresses chosen for this movie. Knightley plays her role well, stubborn and smart as she travels the seas with the pirates. I especially enjoyed the scenes with her and Depp while stranded on the remote island. Depp with the comical reliefs due to his disgusting “pirate habits and mentality.” And Bloom as the person who just discovered he was a pirate and is in love with Elizabeth.

The effects in this movie were good for the time it was made. I loved the look of the skeleton pirates, the pirate ship, the costumes, the music, and pretty much all of the acting. I liked the story itself, and how it progressed through the time frame of the entire film. I believe that it was a very good start to the POC franchise and was able to pave the way for all the movies that follow. I’m going to give this film a “Liked It” rating. If you haven’t seen it, you should.
