Adventure | Crime | Suspense | Book-to-Film | 2016

I’m not going to lie to you guys, the first time I rented this film to watch, I watched it two times in a row that’s how much I loved it. Yeah, it’s definitely based off a teen fiction novel, but who cares. That’s the kind of movies that are the most exciting to me. Adventure, saving people, romance. It has everything I want in a film, one that is exciting. Don’t get me wrong, I love films that have a good story and is visually pleasing to watch, but hands down will choose this movie over anything else right now.

Emma Roberts plays Venus, a high school student who is scared to take chances. So when her friend Sydney (Emily Meade) says she doesn’t have any spunk to play the game Nerve, she signs herself up to play. What’s the game? It’s a truth or dare game… without the truth. People watching set up dares for the player to do. When completed, they receive money and when not completed, they just lose the game. The game goes on until there are just a couple people left.

The catch is, you can’t talk about it to the authorities, and there isn’t a single person managing the game. It’s kind of interesting, but I won’t go into too much detail - you’ll just have to watch it. Along the way, Venus teams up with Ian (Dave Franco) in the game and here’s where the teen romance sets in. The plot is full of things you’d expect from a film like this: friendships being tested, romance sprouting, dangerous dares that are exhilarating to watch.

I think the thing I like most about this film is the use of neon. Similar to that of Atomic Blonde, it’s pretty abundant in this film. I also liked when the screen panned out to all of NYC and you could see each player’s screen name and where they were. I also loved the soundtrack on this film. I mentioned in another review recently that when I notice the soundtrack it’s either because it really sucked or I really enjoyed it. For this one, the music was fun and upbeat. Particularly in the scenes where they were leaving the store. Just made it fun.

You already know what I’m going to give this, a “Loved It” and I don’t care what anyone says about it. If you like teen fiction where the protagonist has to bring down a network of anonymous people, then this movie is for you. It’s thrilling and just plain fun to watch.
