Mixed Nuts is just that - a bunch of "mixed nuts" with scenes that are so random that they hardly fit together. Philip (Steve Martin) is a manager of a suicide-prevention hotline called Lifesavers, which is where the majority of the movie takes place. Their office is in an apartment building and to make matters worse after just being dumped, he receives an eviction notice from the landlord. Philip works with two women: Mrs. Munchnik (Madeline Kahn) and Catherine (Rita Wilson). Mrs. Munchnik is a woman who has been married a few times and pretty much just hates the world, while Catherine is a sweet young woman who struggles with loneliness - that doesn't really help her a whole lot when trying to talk someone down from suicide. This film tries to be a comedy, but most of the scenes just fail. There are just too many different character personalities coming together. Throw in the weird neighbor from downstairs (Adam Sandler in a very minor role), a transvestite, and a crazy pregnant lady and you got yourself a party. Now, I'm not saying there aren't any funny scenes, there are some. Like when Mrs. Munchnik gets locked in the elevator or when Gracie just says anything at all, but it really is just a hodge podge of events that may or may not (I haven't quite decided yet) fit together as the group tries to enjoy their Christmas. Before the movie is over we see break-ups, hook-ups, strange encounters between strangers, murder, awkward dancing, awkward singing, suicides, almost suicides, and a baby being born. Truly a bunch of mixed nuts. I give this movie a "Hated It."
