I remember the first time I watched this movie, I went to see it with my family for our Christmas day movie outing.. My poor brother had to sit through this. I for one, am not a fan of this film. I wasn’t the first time I watched it and my opinions definitely didn’t change this time. Being a musical, having a plethora of stars, being a Disney film, and being based on fairy tales, I would have expected a better opinion. Everyone who stars in Into the Woods:
Anna Kendrick plays Cinderella
Meryl Streep plays the witch
Chris Pine is Cinderella’s Prince
Emily Blunt is the Baker’s wife
James Corden is the Baker
Christine Baranski as Cinderella’s stepmother
Johnny Depp plays the big bad wolf
And then there’s a bunch of other characters with people casted that I had not heard of: Little Red Riding Hood, Jack from Jack in the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, Rapunzel’s prince, and Cinderella’s stepsisters (Lucy Punch plays one of the evil stepsisters in this AND in Ella Enchanted.. She much really know her evil step-sister roles!)
I think the reason that I didn’t like it was because it’s one of those Broadway musicals that don’t have much actual dialogue and everything gets sung. This is the same reason I don’t LOVE Rent, but I love all the big musical numbers (except for maybe the two Princes) and the plot. Cinderella’s story, Jack and Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and Little Red Riding Hood: all their stories coming together to be tied up in a bow along with the Baker and his Wife’s story intertwining.
I did like the effects and the overall representation of the characters. Particularly Johnny Depp as the Big Bad Wolf.
I’m going to go ahead and give this film a “hated it.” It just didn’t entertain me at all and frankly I did not want to watch it again and most likely won’t again in the future. (2/5)
