Starring: Scarlett Johansson and Pilou Asbaek

Director: Rupert Sanders
Runtime: 1 hour, 47 minutes
Action | Crime | Drama | 2017

The concept of cyber-enhanced humans is an interesting one. In The Ghost in the Shell, Major (played by Johansson) is the first of her kind - all cyber with a human brain. They told her that she was in a horrible crash and that this was the only way they could save her. She is now a weapon, the perfect soldier and is devoted to stopping criminals. So when terrorist attacks ensue, with the intention to bring down Hanka Robotics Corp, she makes it her mission to stop the bad guy.

Now, all of that sounds great. The storyline is good and the science fiction portion of it is great. I just didn’t find this film visually pleasing at all. There were way too many things going one. They truly embraced that video game aspect of it, with holograms everywhere. And as I write that, I discover that this movie isn’t technically based off a video game. I guess we made a poor choice on the lead movie for this event huh? The Ghost in the Shell is a comic book, that was then adapted into an anime film in 1995, which spurred a video game. So is it based on the comic book or the video game? My money's on the comic book, but what do I know? Just a girl who watches movies and rants about them. Never read the comic book or played the game.

Anyway, as I was saying. The effects were cool, but way too much for me. I personally hated the outfit that Major had to wear when she was on duty. Looked like she was naked. I guess that is necessary for the “go invisible” characteristic she has. Everything really distracted me from the story itself, and therefore the acting felt shotty as well.

Overall, I’m not a fan of this movie. I felt like there were many places that were disconnected in the film story and it wasn’t extremely easy to follow. Now that I’m thinking about it, I understand and now exactly what she was trying to accomplish. But it was just hard to determine that while watching. I may have fallen asleep, too. I’m going to give this film an “okay” rating. I don’t recommend it, but it’s not a complete waste of time like other movies I’ve seen. (2/5)
