Foxcatcher is about two young men (Mark and Dave Schultz - love the names BTW) who work with John DuPont in order to make it to the Olympics for wrestling. DuPont wanted to start the official training center for the Olympic wrestling team on his estate, calling it "Foxcatcher." This movie is nearly 100% awkward the entire time. Mark and Dave's (Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo) brotherly relationship is awkward, John DuPont (Steve Carell) is awkward in general, and all the interactions between the three is awkward. It was hard for me to watch.
There was definitely a psychological toll on both Mark Schultz and John DuPont. Mark lost it in his hotel room before a match, eating everything in sight. That chocolate cake looked absolutely delicious. John lost it at the end of the movie. I won't give anything away, but that plot twist really caught me off guard! I wonder how much of this story is true.
Overall, this movie was not a happy one. I have been to a few wrestling matches in the past, and they are definitely not portrayed like that in the movie. They were actually exciting to watch in real life. I ended up having to watch this in pieces because I couldn't sit there for the entire thing at once. Needless to say, I hated this movie and don't recommend it for watching.
