When I heard that this film was nominated for Best Picture, I was a little taken off guard. Mainly because I only knew this movie to be a racing movie, but after actually watching it I realized that the storyline is so much more than that. Yes, it's basically just a racing movie, but it has principles and "morals" involved. And quite honestly, it even added fire to the flame that is my hatred for Ford. But enough about that, we want to talk about the movie right?
Well, it's the 1960s Ford is in a slump, on the verge of bankruptcy. Someone comes up with this plan to get into the racing business in hopes to raise sales (at the time, everyone was apparently into sports cars), so the head honchos meet with Ferrari to buy their failing business. When they are quickly snubbed, Mr. Ford Jr (or was it the second?) wants to stick it to them and invent a race car that will BEAT a Ferrari in a huge French race. To do this, they enlist Caroll Shelby (which I'm sure you've heard his name, I had no idea the Shelby race cars were named because he designed them), who is played by the one and only (and my favorite actor) Matt Damon. Alongside Ken Miles (Christian Bale), the two try to take on the task at beating Ferrari.
The film itself has a great story. Tales of criticism and defeat, but also tales of triumph and friendship. I know that this movie is based on a true story, and I know that I'm sure most of the parts were dramatized for the big screen; however, I can only imagine that much of this was actually true. Here's a link to a pretty good article from Time Magazine. I do think the race in the end was a bit too much of the overall run time, but I guess it makes sense for such a long race (24 hours is crazy!)
Ford V Ferrari was nominated for the following Academy Awards:
I think that this film may have a chance in the sound categories, but I'm not so sure it will get best picture. Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie - more tan I thought I would - with its great plot and fast cars. But there are other films in the best picture category that I would pick first (predictions to come later this week!). I'm going to give this film 5/5 stars: I'd watch again, recommend it, and may even add it to my collection. ✩ ✩ ✩ ✩ ✩
