Stars: Meryl Streep, Hugh Grant, Simon Helberg
Run Time: 1 hour, 51 minutes

Florence Foster Jenkins stars Meryl Streep and tells the story of an elderly woman who loves the arts and wants to be an opera singer. After watching an opera singer, she fell in love with the sound and decided that that is what she was going to do, even if it was the last thing. She hired a pianist, Cosme McMoon (Simon Helberg a.k.a Howard from The Big Bang Theory). Along with her husband St. Clair (Hugh Grant) she practices her opera singing. The thing is, she is not good. However, know one tells her the truth and she continues to practice and eventually perform in front of an audience. In the beginning, St. Clair ensures that only the bribe-able news reporters and those "patrons" of the arts are allowed in attendance. With a standing ovation, Florence is under the impression that she is completely amazing and must grow within this art field.

She records a record and sends them to all her friends. At some point, the radio station gets a copy and it's the most requested song on the radio - not for the reason she'd think though. In the end, she dreams of singing in front of a sold out crowd at Carnegie Hall.

This film is based on the true story of Florence Foster Jenkins and how she made her dreams come true regardless of what everyone was saying - or not saying - about her.

  • I liked Meryl Streep in this role. Though I know that Meryl Streep is a wonderful singer (i.e. Mama Mia or Into the Woods) her role in this movie was still spectacular.
  • I liked Simon Helberg in his role as well. Though I still find it a little weird that he plays someone other than Howard from The Big Bang Theory.
  • I liked the story of Florence. Her dreams, personality, and driveness are inspiring.
  • I hated how they just didn't tell her the truth about her singing, though if they had would she have been able to accomplish her dreams and become a loved star?
  • I hated that St. Clair was cheating on her. And that Cosme had to hide it from her as well.
  • Favorite quote: "They say I couldn't sing, but they can't say I didn't sing."

I found this movie to be somewhat comical. Her lack of opera-voice was the best touch on this part. Meryl portrayed Florence perfectly (from what I saw in the closing credits anyway) and though it was awful singing, it was still beautiful in a way. A woman not caring how she sounds but performing for the masses anyway. The best part was, while sitting at home, my dog kept looking at the screen and tilting her head wondering what and where that awful sound was coming from. I'm going to give this movie an "okay" as I probably wouldn't watch it again, but I still believe that Meryl stole the show in this one and it wasn't a terrible watch.

I'm interested in checking out this movie. However, I'm quite conflicted because you only gave it an average rating. I might have to check up on more reviews, before I make my mind. I'll also check your other reviews as well. I really find this useful and hope you continue sharing with, your insightful reviews.
