Stars:  Isabelle Huppert, Laurent Lafitte, Anne Consigny
Run Time: 2 hours, 10 minutes

Elle is about a woman who is sexually assaulted in her home. Having a troubled past - her father was a mass murderer - she refuses to get the police involved in the attack. Though she goes on with her life as best she can, she wants to track down the assailant herself to know who he is. She starts getting weird text messages and starts to feel like she is being stalked. Michele (Isabelle Huppert) is the head of a company that makes video games, and she has different personality. She is cruel to her family and has no mercy when it comes to speaking her opinions.

Eventually, the man comes back at her again later in the movie and she is able to pull his mask off before he rapes her again. Now knowing who he is, she still doesn't contact the police, and wants to take matters into her own hands.

  • I hated Michele's personality. She was cruel to the ones she "loved'' and vengeful - even to those who have done nothing wrong to her. She was having an affair with her best friend's husband and trying to start an affair with her neighbor. And when she told her friends about the attack, she did so nonchalantly like it wasn't a big deal.
  • I hated the video game that her and her team were working on. It was disgusting and I don't know how anyone could play that game (it was a video game right? This may have just flown right over my head if it was supposed to be some kind of porn or something).
  • I liked the mystery of this film.
  • I don't like how she just kind of had a "change of heart" randomly in the movie. It was strange.
  • I'm unsure of whether I liked the ending or not. The way she handled it was very dark and spiteful.

This movie is definitely a mystery, but it's not a mystery in the sense that one would think. To me, I felt like the mystery itself was more "What is Michele going to do?" At one point in the movie she is terrified and angry about what happened to her, and at a different part I wasn't so sure that was the case. Perhaps it is because the movie is entirely in French and reading subtitles may not portray much, but still I had no clue what Michele was thinking or going to do next in this film. Isablle Huppert did an amazing job in her role though, I'm sure I wouldn't have felt the way I do about the character if she didn't. I'm going to give this movie an "okay" rating. It was just too strange to wrap my head around.
