Chi-Raq - Hated It

Wow.

This movie made me extremely uncomfortable. I'm really hoping that the entire movie was supposed to be a satire, though I'm not 100% sure if that is the case.

So about Chi-Raq. It's about two gangs in Chicago that are so gun happy that a little girl dies from a stray bullet. The women decide to boycott sex to try and convince the men in the gangs to stop violence and make a peaceful neighborhood for all. Here are some problems I had with this movie:
  1. In the beginning, there's a scene of him rapping on stage... do people really talk like that? What do you expect to happen when saying things like he was?
  2. Very vulgar. It was so vulgar that it was almost comical. Is that a thing?
  3. Chi-Raq (Nick Cannon, yes he actually goes by the name "Chi-Raq") is with some random girl and right after they are done he is all like "I miss you baby" to his girl that cut him off. Morals? I think not.
  4. The ENTIRE movie is a rhyme. LITERALLY. THE ENTIRE MOVIE.
  5. The church synchronized dancing - this reminds me of a time I had to do that at mass. Don't remind me.
  6. This movie was just way to long.
  7. The ending.... "sex-match" ..... On live television? Are you serious?

Some things I somewhat liked in this movie:
  1. Cyclops has a blinged out eye patch (ok, I admit it, I loved the eye patch).
  2. Samuel L Jackson as the narrator was the most entertaining part for me.
  3. John Cusack as the priest.
  4. "What you looking at?"  "Absolutely nothing" was probably the best burn I heard the entire movie. Especially since it was a very dramatic scene.
  5. The lessons learned. Stop the violence. Promote peace. Love one another.

Chi-Raq is an adaptation of Lysistrata, a Greek play from 411BC about a woman trying to stop a war... wow I had no idea that this tale was so ancient. Who knew?

So, there you have it. This movie was not one that I would even consider watching again. Hated it.

Picture
I do kinda like these movie posters though
