My naivety really got me on this one. When we added this movie to our 90’s week lineup, I did not read the synopsis. I legitimately thought that it was going to be about dancing disco and partying it up in the 70s. And I guess it kind of was, but it was so much more R-rated that I expected. A movie about porno-making that isn’t a comedy? I don’t know. I bet this movie was popular when it came out, it had some redeeming qualities, but not so much my style of movie.
Mark Wahlberg plays a young man who is disgraced by his mother, that goes off to make a name for himself… Dirk Diggler, Porn Star. Burt Reynolds plays Jack, the man behind the camera; and Julianne Moore plays Amber, the co-star to many of Dirk’s movies.
The film itself is just about Dirk’s life in the pornography world. Making friends, making enemies, doing drugs, etc. It’s honestly fairly boring of a movie. I’ve never been a fan of movies that don’t have much of a plot other than to follow around a character for his life story.
There’s also some other actors in this movie that are always interesting to see when they were younger and less famous (assumingly). John C Reilly it’s Dirk’s best friend and wingman throughout the entire movie. And Philip Seymour Hoffman is another friends of Dirk’s who works more behind the scenes. Rest in Peace Mr. Hoffman. And we see William Macy again in this film, who I don’t know if I’ve seen before Fargo, which I watched on the same day as this one!
Overall, I did not enjoy this movie. It was fine at first, then once it started spiraling out of control I didn’t want anything else to do with it. I’m going to go with a “hated it” on this one. There are so many famous actors in this movie, but it just wasn’t worth the time for me. Especially since it’s 2 and a half hours long! What now?!
