SLIFF Review: Bad Grandmas shows at the Tivoli on Delmar at 6:30 pm (11/2).

Starring: Pam Grier, Florence Henderson, Susie Wall
Director: Srikant Chellappa
Runtime: 1 hour, 32 minutes
Action | Comedy | Crime | 2017

To kick off the St. Louis Film Festival this year, they have the world premiere of Bad Grandmas. Four grandmothers accidentally kill a con man, and when his partner shows up things start to go south for the group of friends. To me, this film sounds a lot like Rough Night, but without the inappropriate jokes.

As the film started out, it felt like an over dramatization like what you see on prescription medicine commercials. But the story progresses quickly and I’m immediately interested in what happened and what is going to happen and how it all will end.

Bobbi (Susie Wall) walks into Mimi’s (Florence Henderson) crying her eyes out because her ex-son-in-law is kicking her out of her house. Well, this won’t do, so Mimi goes to confront him. As I said in the synopsis, she accidentally kills him and the web of lies ensues. Together, Bobbi, Mimi, Coralee (Pam Grier), and Virginia (Sally Eaton), attempt to cover up what happened.

The comedy in this film has just the right amount. Similar to that of Going in Style, with the old people jokes, but there is also a little of them doing things that teenagers normally do - which is a great way to bring humor to the screen. I’m glad that there weren’t any totally inappropriate jokes like other “Bad” movies.
The filming of this movie was a little strange, and I think it’s the only thing I didn’t like about the film in general. There were random turns about the room that I assume were supposed to leave you with a little bit of suspense and just a tad of excitement. As I said before, a lot of the time it felt like a prescription pill commercial with how the dialogue was written and even how it was delivered. I think the detective was the worse with this.

Overall though, I enjoyed watching it and found myself laughing, particularly at the old ladies. Their friendship was great and I felt like the four actresses had good chemistry with each other that allowed for said friendship to truly become the film. I’m going to give this film a “Liked It” rating and am glad that SLIFF is starting off with such a fun film. (4/5)
