A horror movie that follows a couple camping who then gets attacked by a bear. Interesting concept if you ask me, but done well? Not so much.
Backcountry stars Jeff Roop and Missy Peregrym as Alex and Jenn. The film starts off with them arguing, so I knew it was going to have a lot to do to build up to the horror film this is deemed as being. They get to the parking lot, take a canoe over to the hiking trail, and begin their weekend vacation of solitude. First, I'd like to say that I loved the shots of the landscape in this film. The lake they were on in the beginning was gorgeous - which stemmed a conversation between the hubby and I on how I'd love to go up to Canada for hiking and whatnot one day. Second, that was probably the only thing I liked about this movie. The introduction of Eric Balfour who plays Brad honestly didn't do much to the plot, other than adding more tension between the couple as Jenn gets more and more angry they are even camping in the first place (I feel you girl, I don't do camping either). Needless to say they get lost and things eventually go to shit. The movie itself is extremely predictable - which is usually fine with me, but for some reason it just annoyed me this time. The thing that bothered me about the movie: you don't even see the bear until 1 hour into the film - I checked the time when we finally see the bear. Literally an entire hour for a movie that has a runtime of 1 hour and 32 minutes. And then, that's really the only scene that has anything horrific happen. So basically, you see the bear for 15 minutes (I didn't check this, just estimating). The chasing scene was obviously bogus - but I get it, you can't actually endanger the actress (unless maybe you use a CGI based bear? Hmm...) Overall, it just was not worth my time. One hour of a couple walking through the woods and bickering, 15 minutes of bear horror, and then the last 15 minutes of the ending. Oh... the ending. It wasn't very epic. Apparently this film is based on a true story, I wonder what all is actually true? I'm giving this a "hated it." The acting wasn't great and I absolutely just hated the storyline. Also, the couple did not seem like a couple to me, I think it was severely miscast.
