Fantasy | Horror | 2010

I was strangely surprised with this rendition of The Wolfman because it truly was a remake. The main characters were the same, the overall gist of the movie was the same, and for the most part the plot was the same. Yes, the Talbots have different first names, but the fact that this rich family is the center for the lycanthropic events in this small town it’s more or less the same.

Benicio Del Toro plays Lawrence Talbot and Anthony Hopkins plays Sir John Talbot, the father of Lawrence. This newer version has more to the story then just one man turning into a werewolf while he tries to fight the power and while the villagers want his head on a platter. There are scenes with him in the mental institution, being electrocuted and forced into solitude, ya know since lycanthropy was just a mental disease back then and all the doctors truly believed that he would not actually turn into a werewolf. Well, that scene was awesome.
Then there’s Gwen, played by Emily Blunt, the love interest for Lawrence. Just like the original, he did not want to hurt her, but can’t control himself while he is a beast. It’s a love story with a tragic ending.

The Wolfman is much more horrific than I imagined it being. The slaughtering that goes on is indeed bloody, but there is also a ominous feel to the film in general. One thing that was pretty great about the film was the fight scene between Lawrence and his father. Both taking their curse in different ways, one loving it and embracing it while the other is fighting against his urges.

In the end, there wasn’t much else that stood this movie apart from the rest. I honestly didn’t even know that this movie existed until we did this whole Monster Movie month thing. I don’t think I would watch this film again. I’m going to go with an “okay” rating (2.5/5).
