His parents are broke, fighting, and he is being transferred to a new school. Being a teenager, new to the school, he is being picked on by both bullies and the principal/priest. One day, he sees a girl, Raphina (Boynton) and quickly decides that she is amazing. He tells a white lie, that he is in a band and wants her to star in their music video, and that’s when the real story begins.

He puts together the band, learns to write and play music, and makes friends from his new school finally. Though the majority of the story is about Conor falling in love with Raphina and building bonds between him and his new friends, it’s also about self discovery and finding himself and the strength to get through each day.

This movie was entertaining due to all the music that’s played. It was Conor’s escape from real life. Sing Street takes place in 1980’s Dublin, so it has two things going for it in my opinion: Irish accents and 80’s music. I loved the music that filled the speakers of my television, and the songs that Conor and the band were writing were fun to listen to as well.
I most enjoyed the relationship between Conor and his older brother, Brendan (Reynor). Though Brendan is depressed about how his life turned out, it was evident that he still wanted the world for his brother. And when their parents were fighting, they spent time together listening to music and dancing in the bedroom to drown out the noise. I don’t have an older brother, but it seems like he is a good one to Conor.

I hated the principal and I’m glad at the outcome of their big gig.

In the end Conor was able to fight his demons and follows his new dreams. I really enjoyed watching this movie and would recommend it (it’s on Netflix right now, so better hurry!). I’m going to give Sing Street a “liked it” rating. This movie reminded me a lot of Begin Again starring Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo… and as I type this sentence I see that it’s the same director. Makes sense. Watch that movie too y’all. (4/5)
