Crime and suspense? Sounds like a good combination of things for me to like it. Bad Times at the El Royale was just alright. Yes it had crime and suspense and some thrills, but to me it felt just like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which I didn't like very much. There were several different stories that had to come together in the end, which they did, but along the way wasn't as a straight arrow as I would have liked.
Jeff Bridges plays a priest, Cynthia Erivo plays a singer, Dakota Johnson plays a concerned older sister, John Hamm plays the CIA (?) agent. All major players in the "what's going to happen next" frame of this film. On top of it all, they throw Chris Hemsworth in there and he's the damn bad guy (or are they all bad guys?). Honestly, there's just a lot going on and it was hard to follow up until the end. I did like that they wrapped it up in a bow.
Overall, it wasn't a terrible movie. Each person sharing their own stories as to how they ended up at the el Royale and how each person had their hands in the overall storyline. I actually liked each person in their role. And DAMN does Cynthia Erivo have an amazing voice!
One thing I'd like to mention, is the El Royale hotel itself seems like an awesome place.. ya know if it wasn't for the giant mirrors in the rooms. The fact that it sits directly on the state line and you can either choose to stay in California or Nevada, that's pretty neat. I'm going to say this movie is just okay - although it has that 70s whodunnit feel (even though it's not really a whodunnit) so if you're into that, I recommend. It's fairly slow paced. I give 3/5.
