Stars: Johnny Depp, Maria Bello, John Turturro
Director: David Koepp
Runtime: 1 hour, 36 minutes
Categories: Suspense, Thriller
Based on: Four Past Midnight: Secret Window, Secret Garden

To kick us off for “Stephen King” weeks, we have The Secret Window which stars Johnny Depp as Mort Rainey, a troubled novelist. When a man comes knocking at his door claiming that Mort has stolen his story, the man starts to hurt him in more ways than one and Mort starts to go crazy as he races against the 3 day time limit to prove he wrote the story first. As a suspense film, it is definitely full of different twists and turns that lead the viewer to believe one thing, and then almost immediately change your mind. I for one, so the final twist coming a mile away. As a thriller film, it was definitely thrilling from start to finish. Each time Mort thinks he has bested the man, something happens to throw him out of the game again and again.

Other than that, there wasn’t too much of anything special to this film. The nagging ex-wife played by Maria Bello and her new boyfriend (Timothy Hutton) just seemed to push Mort further and further into insanity on top of all the stuff with the mystery man “Shooter.” I didn’t like the dog… why can’t books and movies just leave the dog alone? For goodness sake people. I liked the story in general. Not so sure on the ending, it was a bit different than I would normally expect for this type of film. I think I liked it. Yeah, we will go with that.

Overall, I would say we started off “Stephen King” weeks off right with this movie. Johnny Depp played the writer gone crazy pretty well, all the other actors were just so-so in my opinion. John Turturro played Shooter and definitely had the creep factor, but I wasn’t convince the entire time that he was murderous and conniving as the character should be. I’ll give this movie a “Liked It” even though the whole dog thing.
