With the underwhelming Batman v Superman and Justice League, but the totally awesome Wonder Woman, I had no ideas on what to expect from Aquaman. I could only imagine that the filmmakers did the comic book justice, particularly with the story line and with bringing to life the fantastical ideas of an underwater army and the infamous lost city of Atlantis. I would say that this film fell in between Wonder Woman and Justice League for me. It was good though at times I felt like it was just too much to handle.
I want to say that Jason Momoa owns the role of Aquaman, but being a non-comic book reader, I have no idea what the character is supposed to act like. I would say he makes the role his own and harnesses the stubbornness of a man who is both angry and defiant towards his heritage and bloodline duties.
Secondly, the effects were a bit too much for me at times. They were definitely amazingly put together and the imagination for the underwater scenes was great to watch, just too fantastic if that is even a thing. Honestly, it was just the scenes that were underwater that felt too much to me, but it didn’t at all take away from the film or change my feelings towards enjoying it.
I loved the leading lady character and definitely will be keeping her amazing costume in my thoughts for halloween. I will give this film a “Liked It” and recommend that you be willing to sit there for 2 ½ hours with constant action and special effects, it’s basically nonstop like you would imagine from this type of film. I still look forward to another Wonder Woman film and still will say that Marvel films are ahead in my book, but this one is fun and well thought out. (4/5).
