Stars: Mandy Moore and Claire Holt
Director: Johannes Roberts
Runtime: 1 hour, 29 minutes
Category: Horror/Thriller

The minute I heard about this film I was super excited for it to come out so I could see it. Thankfully, I had the opportunity to see it in an advanced screening, and couldn’t pass that up. 47 Meters Down stars Mandy Moore and Claire Holt, two sisters that are on a vacation in Mexico. Lisa (Mandy Moore) is going through a breakup so Kate (Claire Holt) pushes her do something daring and “not boring” - go inside a cage and have sharks swim around them. Well, this being a shark thriller and all, I’m sure you can guess what happens next. The cage falls and the race is on to conserve their air, evade the sharks, and ultimately stay alive.

From the start, this movie had a sheer eerie factor, with the music choices and the camera shots chosen. Each part of the movie, except for when they are partying on dry land, had a complete ominous feeling that made me want to bite my fingernails. I was legitimately terrified that they were not going to be saved and/or eaten by the sharks. Shark movies have come a long way I feel like, but the goal is the same in the end - get out of the water and overcome. I like that this film has a different feel than being stranded on a rock like The Shallows or just swimming in the ocean like Jaws, the main characters are actually stuck at the bottom of the ocean giving the shark the upper hand.

I thought that the sharks in this film were excellent. Not for one minute did I not think that they weren’t real. There was one scene with a flare gun that really stood out in my mind, completely terrifying. Along with the sharks, there were plenty of jump factor moments that well, made me jump. I feel like this film was perfectly timed and the director did an awesome job with this. As for the storyline, it was predictable, but what do you expect? Most horror/thrillers are right? There was one point that I should have seen coming, but didn’t for some reason. Love a good twist.

One thing I want to say before I close out this review, Mandy Moore’s character annoyed me a little bit in the beginning. I can only imagine how scary it would be in real life, but at some point you need to realize that all that screaming and hyperventilating is going to use up all the air. I just felt like it went on for awhile, all I’m saying, I am sure I would act the same exact way in her shoes. Regardless of this though, the two characters I thought did a good job. If I were Lisa I wouldn’t have let my sister talk me into getting into a cage like that. Them acting scared at the bottom of the seafloor made me scared for them, so I guess they did their job. Overall, I thought this movie was great. I’m going to give it a “Loved It” rating and recommend it to all you shark movie lovers out there when it’s released on June 16th.
