[Review] A Simple Favor

9/17/2018

When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I immediately was reminded of Pretty Little Liars. From what little the trailer showed us, this fact alone really intrigued me in wanting to see this movie, along with the fact of the two leading actresses. As David said in his All I See Is You review, Lively has been all over the map when it comes to movies ever since Gossip Girl ended. There have been some good ones, Shallows for example, and there have been some bad ones, All I See is You for example. A Simple Favor however...

[Double Feature] All I See Is You

9/12/2018

by Shannon
David: Since Blake Lively did Gossip Girl and Green Lantern, her movies have just been all over the map. The Shallows is probably one of her more critically successful, though I thought it...
Shannon: So I had an idea as to what this movie would be about, but I wasn’t prepared for what transcribed across the screen. I felt like I was watching a kaleidoscope while on drugs...

[Double Feature] The Prestige

by David
by Shannon
David: Everyone, I have a confession to make. I rarely make fully declarative statements about movies, because your opinions on them can so often change. Sometimes you find humor...
Shannon: Going into this movie, I knew 2 things. One, it was a Christopher Nolan film which I'm 50/50 on recently in liking the film. And two, it was about magicians. That's all I knew! Well...

[Double Feature] Blade Runner 2049

8/6/2018

by Shannon
David: Hello and welcome to Sci-Fi month here at DFP. We choose this month in honor of my birthday, so we're filling it with films a plenty from one of the best genres. I hope you...
Shannon: I will say that this new Blade Runner movie is better than the first. Though it still has the same feel to it. I don't know what it is about these movies, but for some reason...

[Double Feature] Neverlake

7/25/2018

by David
by Shannon
David: I can’t remember where I came across this film. After so many horror movie lists, I often add things to hopefully address. That’s where I came across this ghost story set in...
Shannon: Neverlake is - what I'm assuming anyway - a low budget film that's almost not even available for watching. Luckily, I was able to find it on Hoopla for free (yah!) so I watched...

[Double Feature] Memento

7/20/2018

by David
by Shannon
David: Memento is best gone into knowing as little about the film as possible. Whether that is seeing it for the first time, or revisiting the film after nearly a decade (like me), the film works...
Shannon: I actually couldn't make it through this movie. It was pretty obvious when it started what was up with the main character, he had short-term memory loss so he always...

[Double Feature] The Killing of a Sacred Deer

7/9/2018

by David
by Shannon
David: Iphigenia, or the story or her, is where the title comes from. I had to Google that, so don’t think I’m that awesome. Essentially, Agamemnon kills one of Artemis’s sacred deer...
Shannon: When the trailers before the movie are 5 for 5 movies that have gotten "Hated It" ratings, I did not enjoy this film. When a movie starts off with a deer/cow/whatever having open heart surgery...

[Double Feature] 1922

6/29/2018

by Shannon
David: I am at the point now, as I’ve probably surpassed 400 reviews in our short time together, DFP readers, where I fear repeating myself at times. Some of my favorite subjects in horror...
Shannon: For this film, I actually took notes (which is something I really need to start doing again so I have things to remember to talk about on these review posts). Basically, a man and his son...

[Double Feature] The Autopsy of Jane Doe

6/18/2018

by David
by Shannon
David: André Øvredal. If you don’t know his name, particularly among the horror community, I’d learn it. He’s the director of a little watched but terrific film (one of my favorite monster movies)...
Shannon: The title of the movie is the entire description possible. A couple corner’s cut into the body of a Jane Doe and strange things happen. In the scheme of things, I can see why someone...

[Double Feature] The Orphanage

6/6/2018

by David
by Shannon
David: There’s an anatomy to horror films that I think most casual viewers don’t understand. There is a lot of work that goes into making someone scared. If you only show reactions, you...
Shannon: First of all, I watched this movie the same day as Platoon, and I almost fell asleep in this one as well but didn’t because I truly wanted to see what was happening. The Orphanage is ...

[Double Feature] Suburbicon

6/4/2018

by David
by Shannon
David: Because Shannon loves Matt Damon, we will probably work through his entire filmography at some point. On one hand, he’s been in some damn good movies – Good Will Hunting...
Shannon: Again, I judge a movie by it’s cover. Suburbicon did not exactly have the plot that I was looking for or expected. For some reason, I had it in my head that this was like John Wick...

[Double Feature] Se7en

5/30/2018

by David
by Shannon
David: People have difficulty classifying movies like Se7en. Is it a horror film? Is it a crime drama? I for one believe it’s both, which may be due to the fact the when I first watched it as a young teen...
Shannon: With Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt leading the cast on this one, it’s not terrible. The film is a crime suspense film that follows to detectives as they chase a serial killer. At times...

[Double Feature] Scream

5/30/2018

by David
by Shannon
David: Wes Craven was one of the most talented horror directors that we had, and never had an issue with changing the rules of what a horror movie could be. But he grew tired of the horror...
Shannon: I really can’t believe that I haven’t seen this movie. I also can’t believe that Drew Barrymore was only in the film for the first scene. I guess that’s fine though. It’s kind of like Psycho...

[Double Feature] Wind River

by Shannon
David: Writer Taylor Sheridan stormed onto the scene with Siciario in 2015 and continued with a strong follow-up in 2016’s Hell or High Water. It was exciting to hear that he had decided...
Shannon: This is the type of movie that sticks with you after watching it. Not going to lie, I thought about what happened to that girl for at least 24 hours after watching this film. It’s the type of movie...

[Double Feature] It Comes at Night

3/29/2018

by David
by Shannon
David: There’s a large portion of horror movies that seem to be coming out that reflect back to an older time, when jump scares were less important, and a slow burning horror was more of the norm...
Shannon: There are so many things I did not like about this movie. I should have known I wouldn’t love it. I mean, I almost always don’t like movies that comes from A24. I don’t know why, probably...

[Double Feature] Happy Death Day

3/26/2018

by David
by Shannon
David: Ah, PG-13 horror, one of the most dangerous pitfalls that a filmmaker can fall into. I don’t even those that make their careers out of it, because it’s got to be extremely...
Shannon: Coincidentally, I am currently binge watching Supernatural on Netflix, and I just watched the episode where Sam has to relive the same day over and over again, ending with Dean’s death...

[Double Feature] Afflicted

3/26/2018

by David
by Shannon
David: I’m an unabashed supporter of the found footage genre. I think it can be remarkably effective when handled the right way. The majority of movies, it’s a gimmick, and it allows for lazier...
Shannon: Okay, I’ve had enough of all these found footage films (I’m sure there is still more that are on the list though, thanks David). This one is about two friends who are traveling the world...

[Double Feature] Mother!

3/21/2018

by David
by Shannon
David: mother! Stormed onto the scene last year when it became yet another famous example of “Critics vs. Populous”.  There were reports of people walking out of the theater, while critics lavished...
Shannon: Basically, I’m on a roll for watching strange movies. Honestly, I’m not hating it. Mother shows us a couple, Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem, who live in this secluded house...

[Double Feature] As Above, So Below

3/12/2018

by David
by Shannon
David: Slightly known fact – I used to be really into finding haunted places around the St. Louis area. Along with that, I also read up about a lot of famous haunted places. One of those places is the Parisian Catacombs...
Shannon: Okay filmmakers. Please stop it with the POV horror films. Just stop. It’s so completely distracting to the story and doesn’t even assist in making it anymore scarier. As Above, So Below...

[Review] Game Night

2/28/2018

Picture

by Shannon

This is one of those movies that you go into the theater thinking that one thing is going to happen, and it does, but then so much more happens that throws you off guard for a second. Game Night is about a group of friends who regularly get together for game nights. This time however, Brooks (played by Kyle Chandler), has decided he wants to host game night and plans for a murder mystery game. Brooks’ brother, Max (Jason Bateman) and his wife Annie (Rachel McAdams) are the key players in the game due to sibling rivalry.
