[Review] Kurusu Serapio

4/5/2019

David: I’ve been off my shorts game for a while, so I apologize, and hope to have time to get back on this soon. I was sent this film by director Marcos Codas far too long ago, watched it, sat down to think about... Read more

[Review] Hang Up!

2/6/2019

One of the first horror shorts we got to review here at DFP was Heir, sent to us by producer Zach Green. Here, we get to come back to our roots a bit with another short review. It’s not horrific in the sense that Heir was, but it is a bit terrifying. Here, a man Gary (Robert Nolan, also in Heir), gets an inadvertent “butt dial” from his wife. He almost hangs up, but a few words cut quickly and he begins to find out so much more than he really would have wanted to know.

[Review] Doll It Up

One of the reasons I like small, independent shorts is that often times they can explore ideas that are literally just that – ideas that someone thought would be funny, or dramatic, or just plain strange. Doll It Up, a short film sent to us by one of our favorite contributors, Timothy J. Cox, is a MFA senior project by director/writer Yalan Hu. The concept is similar to a small film starring Ryan Gosling called Lars and the Real Girl. But it takes the idea further.

[Review] The First Date

I love shorts. They’re one of my favorite parts about becoming a reviewer – before then, my exposure to them was rare. Now, I get the privilege to review them enough that I can rarely keep up with them. For example, it took me far too long to get to The First Date, a five minute film directed and written by Adam Weber.

[Review] Beauty Queen

It’s not very often I get to do multiple shorts by the same director. When I do, I always enjoy it, because I can often see a growth that occurs as a director becomes more confident in the style of what they shoot for in a film. That’s something I got to experience with Nicholas Goodwin’s short film Shadow and now his short film Beauty Queen – which is available on Youtube for those interested...

[Review] Narrative Horror Shorts - SLIFF 2018

For all my new readers: Welcome to DoubleFeaturePreachers.com! For all those returning, welcome back, and thanks for continuing to support us. Every year, like clockwork, November rolls around. And every year, I attempt to watch far too many movies as part of the St. Louis International Film Festival. I’m a humble part-time critic who has a full-time job and a family, so that’s quite an ask. But every year as the festival motors on, I’m so glad that I took the time to watch the films that I did...

[Review] Simon's Quest

10/29/2018

Picture

by David & Shannon

Today’s Double Feature Preacher review is on Simon’s Quest, which features the story of a young gay man who recently was turned into a werewolf as he goes about the business of figuring out how to date now that he is a monster. The film features actors Johnny Pozzi, and Timothy J. Cox, as well as several others. Check it out on IMDB here. I wasn’t sure what direction the film was going to go in when it started. It starts in a fairly horrific manner, with Simon taking a bunch of pills...

[Review] Reina

David: Hello everyone! It’s been quite a bit since we’ve done a joint review, so we figured we’d get back at it. Today we’re covering a suggestion by actor Tim Cox (Twitter handle is @TimothyJCoxAct for those that want to follow someone busy in the independent film community). He sent in Reina, which was written and directed by Philip Vickery. The film is a short about a guy on probably the worst date of his life, after a pretty traumatic loss. Here’s the film’s IMDB page.

Shannon, what were your initial thoughts on Reina?

[Review] Maturing Youth

Happy Father’s Day weekend everyone. As a father myself, and a son, I’ve spoken before about how my father has had an effect on me. I rarely talk about my own sons, but suffice it to say they are more important than any film could ever be to me. So, it was nice that the short I got to review today encompassed some of these themes. Today’s film is Maturing Youth, sent to us by Jennifer Meyer at R&F Entertainment. Roger, played by Sean A Kaufman is living the slacker’s dream

[Review] Who is Elmore Dean?

5/30/2018

Picture

by David

There’s a subsection of independent shorts that exist in a category of their own at many film festivals I’ve been to – “Short shorts”, which normally fall into the five minute range of length. Who is Elmore Dean? Falls into that category at just barely over five minutes. And for a short short, it’s pretty good. That’s because the trick of these ultra-shorts is to give you a topic, give you a setting, and let you draw your own conclusions. And Dean does that.

[Review] Shadow

5/30/2018

Picture

by David

Today’s short film is Shadow, written and directed by Nicholas Goodwin. Shadow deals with one of those most despicable topics that has come out over the past couple years, and that is the topic of college rape. I’m pretty conflicted writing this review, because it’s hard to distance yourself from the material. On one hand, I didn’t really like the film. There were a lot of qualities about it that I think needed some work, which I’ll touch on here shortly.

[Review] Solutions

It’s been a long time since I had the pleasure of reviewing an independent film – I think my last one was for SLIFF last year. But I harbor a specific passion for them, and I wanted to get back into them. So as I combed through the numerous spreadsheets and e-mails, I noticed there was a couple I had neglected that were sent to me. One of them was Solutions, sent to me by one of our frequent contributors Timothy J. Cox...

[SLIFF Review] Narrative Shorts: Horror/Sci-Fi

11/14/2017

Picture

by David

Here I am – back after a year to cover another set of the horror shorts competitions at SLIFF (Here’s last year’s post for those interested). This year, the horror, as it usually does, got combined with science fiction. There were ten shorts that played starting at 10:00 last Friday night. I sat through them, and I can honestly say that I wasn’t as happy as I was last year. But, let’s not get the ghost before the boo. Without further ado, here’s my thoughts on the 2017...

[Review] She Came From the Woods

10/25/2017

by David & Shannon

Hello, and welcome to another DFP review. Today’s horror film is a short sent to us by director Erik Bloomquist. It’s called She Came From the Woods, and it’s IMDB link is here. It’s told in a campfire story format, featuring the classic of horror cliches, teenagers. Erik stated that one of the influences for the format of the film was Nickelodeon’s Are You Afraid of the Dark?, which I would also count as a horror influence for me.

Hello and welcome to DoubleFeaturePreachers.com. Today’s short film is called To Be Alone. The film was sent in by the star of the film, Timothy Cox. Shannon: Today we have another short to bring to you, titled Simple Mind. It stars Timothy J. Cox and is directed by Phil Newsom. The short tells the story of a Bob (Cox) as he is sitting in his therapist’s office while he tells her this story. Needless to say Bob discovers many things about himself during the session. [DFP Review] The Story of 90 Coins

8/3/2017

Picture
David: Hello everyone! Today we are discussing The Story of 90 Coins, the directorial debut of Malyasian film director Michael Wong. The short film tells us the story of Wang and Chen, who are first beginning, and then falling out of a relationship. The story is subtitled in English, and is available on Vimeo. Here is the IMDB page!

Well, my initial thoughts are positive on the short. It’s a little slice of a love story, with a decent message. There are parts I enjoyed more than others - I ultimately think the script is the strongest part - but overall it’s a story that I think a lot of people will relate to.

What were your initial thoughts Shannon?.... FULL REVIEW

[DFP Review] What Jack Built

Shannon
: Today we have another short film to bring to you, What Jack Built. This suspenseful short film stars Timothy J Cox as he plays Jack, who is building something in his cellar. What is it? That is the question.

David, what were your first thoughts after watching this?

David: I really liked the setup of the film. There is almost nothing said (if anything) in the film. This leads to the music largely carrying the tone of the film, which has mixed .... FULL REVIEW
