[Double Feature] American Psycho

11/29/2017

David: It’s really kind of insane how many movies we have about corporate American culture and how shallow and corrupt it is. From The Game (which is criminally underseen by my generation)...
Shannon: So I’m on the fence here when it comes to the review of this film. On one hand, I turned it off because I couldn’t take the animal cruelty anymore. But on the other hand, when the...

David: Important Disclaimer – I have not seen this musical on the stage. After watching the film adaptation, I’m curious as to how much better it is on stage, because there are arguably scenes...
Shannon: I remember the first time I watched this movie, I went to see it with my family for our Christmas day movie outing.. My poor brother had to sit through this. I for one, am not a fan...

[Review] Murder on the Orient Express

Thanks for the welcome David. I appreciate the warm welcome. This film was one which I did not have a great deal of positive or negative pretense. Having never read the Agatha Christie Novel nor ever having seen the original film from 1974, I was very interested in this murder mystery story. I myself am someone who enjoys a good drama/mystery movie

[Review] The Dark Knight

11/20/2017

Picture

There was a Batman movie that I went to go see in theaters back when I was in high school. After watching The Dark Knight last night, I’m still unsure if it was this one or not. The release year makes me think that it was and I just don’t remember a single thing about it. But I’m still unsure. I remember this movie being a huge box office film due to the fact that Heath Ledger had died before its theatrical release (at least that’s what I remember, my facts may be wrong here...

[Review] Magic

I mentioned in my overly gushy Goosebumps post how much Slappy comes to mind when I think of killer ventriloquist dummies. As an amateur ventriloquist, I both loathe and embrace this interpretation. Though the dummies can be scary, they can also bring a lot of joy to people when presented in the correct way – see Jeff Dunham. However, in William Goldman’s movie (and novel) Magic, we find ourselves presented with another dummy worth remembering...

[Double Feature] Justice League

David: I may be a DC fan, but really, I’m just a fan of good characters. I’m just as into the MCU as anyone, and I don’t detract on DC for trying to set up the same thing that Marvel did – the comics have...
Shannon: I was so excited when I got pre-screen tickets to see Justice League, I made sure to get there like 2 ½ hours early. We got the best seats in the theater! Here’s my thoughts...

[SLIFF Review] Last Flag Flying

When I hear “Richard Linklater as director,” I immediately think the atrocious Before Sunrise trilogy that I had to watch for this website. As I scroll through all the movies that he has directed, that has been the only thing I’ve watched, so I don’t go into this movie thinking I’m going to come out with any sort of happy opinion on it...

[SLIFF Review] Narrative Shorts: Horror/Sci-Fi

11/14/2017

Here I am – back after a year to cover another set of the horror shorts competitions at SLIFF (Here’s last year’s post for those interested). This year, the horror, as it usually does, got combined with science fiction. There were ten shorts that played starting at 10:00 last Friday night. I sat through them, and I can honestly say that I wasn’t as happy as I was last year. But, let’s not get the ghost before the boo. Without further ado, here’s my thoughts on the 2017...

[SLIFF Review] My Friend Dahmer

Our society has always had a fascination with morbid, fringe crime. It goes back into our fear of what’s abnormal – a fear of what doesn’t fit in. There are, of course, very famous examples of this in film – The Silence of the Lambs springs immediately to mind, along with Psycho. But there seems to be a very recent resurgence in serial killer interest lately.

[SLIFF Review] Pop Aye

If my Quick Hit for the day didn’t give it away, I’m a large fan (pun delightfully unintended) of pachyderms. Even though a lot of times they are used poorly (I’m looking at you Operation Dumbo Drop), at times they can be really endearing. Look no further than a buddy comedy like Larger than Life to show that sometimes an elephant just makes things better. In the case of today’s SLIFF movie, Pop Aye, the gentle giant of the earth makes a buddy travel dramedy better as well.

[SLIFF Review] Walking Out

11/9/2017

It took awhile for me to get into this film, because I don’t necessarily like hunting or think people should do it, but hey it’s a free country and it’s legal so I’m not gonna go trying to save all the animals… as long as I don’t have to see it happening. So for the better part of the beginning of Walking Out I wasn’t a huge fan. Matt Bomer plays Cal, a father...

[SLIFF Review] What if it Works?

11/8/2017

If you Google “films about mental illness” you get a selection of films like A Beautiful Mind, Black Swan, Rain Man, and Silver Linings Playbook. I like all of those movies, but none of them really remind me of today’s film from SLIFF 2017, What If It Works. It screens tonight (11/8/2017) at the Tivoli theatre at 7:15 and 8:45p this coming Sunday 11/12/2017. Here’s...

[SLIFF Review] Tonight She Comes

There’re not too many things in a horror movie I haven’t seen before. From the so called Worst Movies Ever (like Troll 2and Manos: The Hands of Fate), to movies proclaiming they have the most gore ever (Dead Alive), to movies that just make you squirm (Audition, Salo, etc.), I’ve pretty much covered the gambit in my time as an ambitious movie lover. So whenever I hear reviews of a movie saying that you haven’t seen something like this on screen before...

David: Humans have an innate fear of outer space. It’s something that has been explored by science fiction since we first really began to dream about visiting the stars. We have a fear of the...
Shannon: I probably should have looked this movie up on IMDB before renting and watching it. I knew sort of what it was about, astronauts finding life, but I had no clue that it was a horror film...

[SLIFF Review] Future '38

11/6/2017

Picture

by David

When reading the description for Future '38, you come away interested, but not necessarily impressed. Billed as a lost film from 1938, and in fact, introduced as such by Neil DeGrass Tyson, the idea is one of the first time travel films, with Technicolor, that has been lost for decades before being resurrected now for our viewing pleasure. With the initial start...

[Double Feature] Berberian Sound Studio

David: Horror has always owed a lot to its global nature. When you look at the J-horror craze that came with Ju-on (The Grudge) and Ringu (The Ring), and you look at the Italian masters...
Shannon: The first thing I have to say about Berberian Sound Studio is… how on Earth is this movie only an hour and a half? I felt like I was watching it for like three hours or something. It was...

[SLIFF Review] The Weight

11/2/2017

The Weight starts out with a woman wanting to hire and Private Investigator to find her ex-husband. The story escalates into a past and present story. What happened to Thad (played by Clayne Crawford) until it converges with the present Julie (played by MJ Brackin) and Gayle (played by Heather Roop). Not the first film of this...

[SLIFF Review] Bad Grandmas

by Shannon

To kick off the St. Louis Film Festival this year, they have the world premiere of Bad Grandmas. Four grandmothers accidentally kill a con man, and when his partner shows up things start to go south for the group of friends. To me, this film sounds a lot like Rough Night, but without the inappropriate jokes.

David: Anyone else remember what a whirlwind high school was? What about puberty? The rush of the feeling when your crush walked past? How your world always felt like it was ending...
Shannon: There is little about this film that I liked. Hailee Steinfeld plays Nadine, a misunderstood teenager that feels like the world and God are against her. Typical for a movie based on teenage...
