David: So awhile back, I reviewed Luc Besson’s Valyrian and the City of a Thousand Planets. It had been a long time since I had watched the Fifth Element, and I remember thinking that...
Shannon: Back when I watched Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, I remember David and all the other movie reviewers that I follow talk about how similar it was to this movie...

[Review] Reina

David: Hello everyone! It’s been quite a bit since we’ve done a joint review, so we figured we’d get back at it. Today we’re covering a suggestion by actor Tim Cox (Twitter handle is @TimothyJCoxAct for those that want to follow someone busy in the independent film community). He sent in Reina, which was written and directed by Philip Vickery. The film is a short about a guy on probably the worst date of his life, after a pretty traumatic loss. Here’s the film’s IMDB page.

Shannon, what were your initial thoughts on Reina?

[Review] Independence Day: Resurgence

8/29/2018

Picture

Since we watched Independence Day and I loved it so much, I decided to watch the newest version of the movie to see what that one could be about. It’s basically just as the title sounds like. The aliens come back to Earth and the humans must again save their planet… in the same way really. Being made just a couple years ago though, the special effects are more advanced this time even though they kept a lot of the same concepts.

[Double Feature] Minority Report

David: o I didn’t quite realize how many different Spielberg movies we were covering as part of Science Fiction month. To date, we’ve covered two directors the most this month...
Shannon: When this movie first started, I was a little scared of what it might turn into film-wise. The shots in the beginning sequences are all blurred together and confusing and what not...

David: Mankind has always been fascinated with the idea of others out in the cosmos. Whereas many people channel that obsession into fear, others give us stories of aliens that do good...
Shannon: I was excited to watch this movie because I had heard of it being a super huge movie back in the 70s. I didn't exactly know what it was about, but that's okay right? I figured the effects...

[Double Feature] Independence Day

David: Don’t get me wrong here – I enjoy this movie. Even average movies can provide a decent to large amount of entertainment. Independence Day (1996) is totally a product of its time...
Shannon: So my first question when it comes to this movie is WHY have I not seen this? I was thoroughly entertained by this movie. Will Smith plays Steven Hiller, a soldier in the air force...

This movie was one that we decided to watch randomly that was on Netflix. Apparently, one of Rick's Facebook friends said it was the most scariest movie and that everyone needed to watch it. Well, I wouldn't say it's the most scariest, but it's definitely worth the watch. Justine (Haley Bennett) is the only one on campus during the Thanksgiving break. She decides to take a short trip to the gas station for snacks and what not, and runs into Violet...

David: Firefly was the ill-fated Joss Whedon show that was once released on Fox (I think it was Fox). The show famously had the episodes air in the wrong order and was canceled mid-season...
Shannon: It's definitely evident that this movie was filmed in 2005. It has the same feel of it as The Island did, and some of the older Star Wars movies (the ones no one talks about). But this...

David: Everyone, I have a confession to make. I rarely make fully declarative statements about movies, because your opinions on them can so often change. Sometimes you find humor...
Shannon: Going into this movie, I knew 2 things. One, it was a Christopher Nolan film which I'm 50/50 on recently in liking the film. And two, it was about magicians. That's all I knew! Well...

[Double Feature] Alien: Covenant

David: Ridley Scott began the Alien universe as a tense space thriller “Where no one can hear you scream”. But the franchise began to slide in a totally different direction – first with the...
Shannon: I'm going to admit to you guys, I've never been the biggest fan of the Alien movies. Mostly because they are absolutely grotesque and hard to watch, but that's not usually a problem...

[Review] Life of the Party

8/16/2018

There are some movies with Melissa McCarthy that I love and then there are some that I hate. I think it depends on which type of comedy she's trying to pull off. Is it the immature sex jokes or is the immature fart jokes? Well, I'm a little childish when it comes to things that are funny. Life of the Party is perfect because it's about and older woman, a mom, who goes back to college and is thrown into the 2010's of college parties when all she knows is the 1980s colleges parties back in the day.

David: Often times when I watch a science fiction movie that really is awesome, I type out a big paragraph about why I like the genre so much. But as I’m sure you read my posts a lot, dear reader...
Shannon: I remember when this movie came out, and the fact that it was a space movie just made me not want to watch it. For me, I’m scared of space, like I’m sure a lot of other peoples are...

[Review] The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

Watching Mamoru Hosoda’s filmography in reverse has been pretty interesting. My grades are steadily getting lower, which shows that throughout his career he has grown. It’s powerful growth too – the themes are still there in his early work, but the execution to pull all the themes together lacks a bit. His first stand-out film is about one of my favorite subjects, time travel!

David: Hey guys, I have a confession to make. I like the decade of the 80s quite a lot. I’ve said before it’s my favorite decade for horror films, but there was a lot going on in the 80s. Television, movies...
Shannon: Based on the novel by Ernest Cline, this film dives into the future, 2045 to be exact, when humans have been taken over by electronics. Not taken over in the sense like robots...

I’m continuing last week’s Anime in Summer Wars with another film from director Mamoru Hosoda, Wolf Children. The premise is said to have come from an interaction with a mother where she stated that it was like trying to raise animals… so what if your kids were ACTUALLY part animal?
