[Double Feature] Wind River

3/30/2018

by David
by Shannon
David: Writer Taylor Sheridan stormed onto the scene with Siciario in 2015 and continued with a strong follow-up in 2016’s Hell or High Water. It was exciting to hear that he had decided...
Shannon: This is the type of movie that sticks with you after watching it. Not going to lie, I thought about what happened to that girl for at least 24 hours after watching this film. It’s the type of movie...

[Double Feature] It Comes at Night

3/29/2018

by David
by Shannon
David: There’s a large portion of horror movies that seem to be coming out that reflect back to an older time, when jump scares were less important, and a slow burning horror was more of the norm...
Shannon: There are so many things I did not like about this movie. I should have known I wouldn’t love it. I mean, I almost always don’t like movies that comes from A24. I don’t know why, probably...

[Double Feature] Happy Death Day

3/26/2018

by David
by Shannon
David: Ah, PG-13 horror, one of the most dangerous pitfalls that a filmmaker can fall into. I don’t even those that make their careers out of it, because it’s got to be extremely...
Shannon: Coincidentally, I am currently binge watching Supernatural on Netflix, and I just watched the episode where Sam has to relive the same day over and over again, ending with Dean’s death...

[Double Feature] Afflicted

3/26/2018

by David
by Shannon
David: I’m an unabashed supporter of the found footage genre. I think it can be remarkably effective when handled the right way. The majority of movies, it’s a gimmick, and it allows for lazier...
Shannon: Okay, I’ve had enough of all these found footage films (I’m sure there is still more that are on the list though, thanks David). This one is about two friends who are traveling the world...

[Review] A Wrinkle in Time

3/22/2018

Picture

As the movie starts off, we are shown what kind of father Chris Pine is to Meg (played by Storm Reid). How his love for science and his family keep them together. Honestly, it was really hard for me to imagine Chris Pine in this role, even though I was literally watching it with my own eyes. Well, flash forward to four years later, Meg and Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe) are meet Mrs. Which (Winfrey), Mrs. Whatsit (Witherspoon), and Mrs. Who (Kaling). And the group of them go into space to look for their father.

[Double Feature] Mother!

3/21/2018

by David
by Shannon
David: mother! Stormed onto the scene last year when it became yet another famous example of “Critics vs. Populous”.  There were reports of people walking out of the theater, while critics lavished...
Shannon: Basically, I’m on a roll for watching strange movies. Honestly, I’m not hating it. Mother shows us a couple, Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem, who live in this secluded house...

[Double Feature] Heat

3/19/2018

by David
by Shannon
David: Heat is a 1995 thriller starring (and I am chopping this list substantially down – EVERYONE is in this movie) Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Ashley Judd, Val Kilmer, and Amy Brenneman...
Shannon: I’m just going to get this fact out in the open right now… this is the first movie I’ve watched that had Al Pacino in it… I know let the gasps begin. I had to look up on IMDB what character...

[Double Feature] Bug

3/16/2018

by David
by Shannon
David: We watched the movie A Cure for Wellness a while back – it was one of those movies that quickly derails, but is the epitome of “can’t look away” because it’s absolutely bonkers...
Shannon: I’m going to start off pretty blunt, this movie was weird AF and I hated it. Michael Shannon was naked for almost entirely two scenes…. Let that sink in for a second…

[Double Feature] A Ghost Story

3/15/2018

by David
by Shannon
David: When describing this story, you’re left with a plot that is incredibly simple. A man dies, and he haunts his house. That man is “C” (played by Casey Affleck). He leaves behind a wife, “M”...
Shannon: Okay, so I’m going to be honest here, the first 30 minutes of the film are a complete bore. I almost turned it off because I just couldn’t take how slow the film was moving. Each scene lasted...

[Review] Tomb Raider

3/14/2018

Alicia Vikander is the new Lara Croft in this newest Tomb Raider film, and she kills it. I’ve always been a fan of Alicia, particularly in drama’s with a ton of emotion, but she excels in this action packed film just the same. If you’ve seen the original Tomb Raider movie, starring Angelina Jolie, you have a sense of what the story is about. This new movie takes some of what the original had to offer: dead father, puzzles, finding tombs, and saving the world. However, I liked this one so much more than the one with Angelina Jolie.

[Double Feature] As Above, So Below

3/12/2018

by David
by Shannon
David: Slightly known fact – I used to be really into finding haunted places around the St. Louis area. Along with that, I also read up about a lot of famous haunted places. One of those places is the Parisian Catacombs...
Shannon: Okay filmmakers. Please stop it with the POV horror films. Just stop. It’s so completely distracting to the story and doesn’t even assist in making it anymore scarier. As Above, So Below...

[Double Feature] The Bye Bye Man

3/9/2018

by David
by Shannon
David: Movie monsters (and most horror films in general) have a couple things in common. One – horror movies tend to have rules. They don’t have to be explicitly spelled out to the audience...
Shannon: Well, the synopsis kind of explains it all. Three freshman rent a house and unleash an evil spirit. The manta is “Don’t Say It, Don’t Think It.” The more you think about it, the closer...

[Double Feature] Morgan

3/7/2018

by David
by Shannon
David: Morgan is a science fiction movie that came out in 2016. It features a group of people that have spliced artificial intelligence with a human baby. That baby grew up, and now is...
Shannon: Being a Sci-Fi thriller, I had put this film on my watch list because it seemed like an interesting idea. Morgan (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) is an artificially made human. She is five years old...

[Double Feature] Sky High

3/6/2018

by David
by Shannon
David: After the heavy hitting, dramatic beats of a lot of the Academy Award nominated films, we here at DoubleFeaturePreachers thought it might be nice to do some...
Shannon: Watching this movie for the website really led me to notice that I’ve only ever seen this film when it was airing on the Disney channel. That being said, some of the scenes were still...

[Review] Roman J. Israel, Esquire

3/5/2018

Picture

by Shannon

Denzel Washington stars a Roman Israel, a lawyer working in Los Angeles and this movie is a story about his life. Before I looked it up on IMDB, I had assumed that this movie was based on a true story… it’s not. I wonder why I thought this? Perhaps a lot of lawyer movies I’ve seen lately have been based on a true story and I just assumed.

[Review] The Florida Project

3/5/2018

Picture

by Shannon

Filmed to seem like a documentary (well that’s how I felt while I was watching it), The Florida Project follows around young Moonee (Brooklyn Prince) as her and her friends cause mischief during one Orlando summer. There are some good and bads to this movie.
