[Review] Game Night

2/28/2018

This is one of those movies that you go into the theater thinking that one thing is going to happen, and it does, but then so much more happens that throws you off guard for a second. Game Night is about a group of friends who regularly get together for game nights. This time however, Brooks (played by Kyle Chandler), has decided he wants to host game night and plans for a murder mystery game. Brooks’ brother, Max (Jason Bateman) and his wife Annie (Rachel McAdams) are the key players in the game due to sibling rivalry.

[Review] Red Sparrow

The book that this film is based on was sitting on my table for three weeks unopened, and it stayed that way before I had to return it back to the library. I’m trying to get back into reading, and I have for the most part, just a little too late for Red Sparrow. The story is about Dominika Egorova, a talented and famed ballerina who’s career comes to a shocking hault. To keep her mother from losing medical assistance (I’m assuming she had MS by the acting on this one) he lets her uncle enroll her in Sparrow School where should would become a spy.

[Review] All the Money in the World

Back when I went to see Molly’s Game, I had the opportunity to go see this advanced screening on the same night. In the end, I won the coin toss and we went to see Molly’s Game. Here we are a couple months later, and I’m seeing it anyway because it has been nominated for an Academy Award (Christopher Plummer as a supporting actor). I’m actually surprised Ridley Scott didn’t get a nomination, don’t other people like him?

[Double Feature] Annihilation

David: Make no mistake – I think there will be certain people that leave the theater once Alex Garland’s newest science fiction creation reaches its climax. It’s an extremely divisive ending...
Shannon: So many things I want to say, but finding the words is going to be hard. Mostly because I’m still shocked after watching this movie from the strangeness of it. And to warn you...

[Double Feature] Phantom Thread

David: Apparently this is just the year that I love Best Picture nominees. There are some years where that isn’t necessarily the case, but this year each of the film hits a facet of my film...
Shannon: Oh man. Oh man. This movie is something. My first thoughts while sitting in the theater was that it was super long and I had to use the bathroom, but that was just my first thought...

[Double Feature] Darkest Hour

David: Gary Oldman is one of those actors that appear in everything, and yet somehow no one really even knows about him. He’s Sirius Black, he’s Mason Verger, he’s the human compound’s...
Shannon: It’s World War II and the Germans are taking over Europe. Winston Churchill (played by Gary Oldman) has just been appointed as the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Which...

[Double Feature] Lady Bird

David: Fair warning for those like Shannon out there – this film is not an action packed film. It’s an intensely focused film on primarily one character and her struggle to grow up in a world...
Shannon: It amazes me how I can watch two separate movies i.e. Lady Bird and Darkest Hour just days apart, but feel like one is longer than the other when it’s really not. Lady Bird was like...

[Double Feature] The Post

David: I’m often pretty turned off when a movie starts to preach to me. I’m all for finding new information in a film that could send me on a biography spiral, or interest me in a brand new...
Shannon: Meryl Streep plays Kay Graham, the owner of the Washington Post. The post is having some hard times, falling readerships and a rivalry with the New York Times. This film...

[Double Feature] I, Tonya

David: For those of us that are a bit too young to remember the mid-nineties, it was really interesting to watch this take of The Tonya Harding Story. Tonya Harding, and of course, Jeff Gillooly...
Shannon: Going back to - not so long ago - to when I was flipping through channels on my antenna TV and came across a 60 minutes (or something like it) on the Tonya Harding incident...

[Review] Maze Runner: The Death Cure

I remember reading the Maze Runner and wanting more after the first book, but at that point the second book wasn’t released yet and eventually I forgot all about it thanks to college courses. It wasn’t until I heard they were making it into a movie that I went back and read the last two books in the trilogy. I really enjoyed reading those books and I also enjoy the movies that were adapted from them.

[Double Feature] The Shape of Water

David: Guillermo Del Toro is one of those directors that everyone loves, but is rarely recognized by awards panels outside of the science fiction and fantasy movies. However, he has truly...
Shannon: Ever since I’ve heard about this movie many months ago, it’s been on my radar for one that I’ve want to see. Yes, the synopsis sounded really strange (and it is), but it’s a fantastical...

[Double Feature] Mudbound

David: I didn’t have much of an idea about this film going into it. And honestly, I’d highly advise going into it that way. Mudbound, a film directed by Dee Rees, is an extraordinary...
Shannon: Oscar nominated movies are known to all have one thing in common, a very sad and controversial story that most likely is based off something that actually happened. In this case...

[Double Feature] Dunkirk

David: As Christopher Nolan becomes a more experienced and blockbuster filmmaker, he continues to show an amazing ability to tell a story visually. While most directors have this talent...
Shannon: Dunkirk was one of the big movies that came out last year in 2017. I was slacking a little bit, and am just now getting to watch this film. After all the positive reviews I’ve seen, and all the...
