Tourtieres

I’ve been calling this recipe a pot pie since I decided that it was next on the to-cook list. And it sort of is, just without the gravy based insides. It’s pretty much a meat pie. There is so much meat in this I couldn’t eat a whole lot of it for dinner. That being said though, it was a lot easier to make than the wilted greens (see below).
A pound of beef, a pound of pork, mashed potatoes, veggies in a pie. Yum right? Well, it wasn’t bad. If you read this blog enough, you know that I have a slight problem in cooking when it comes to halving recipes. Well, this problem struck again for the Tourtieres! I didn’t half the all spice. So my meaty insides of the pie were just waaayyyy too sweet for my liking. I will still eat the leftovers, with a lot of salt and probably hot sauce to mask the sweetness. That should do the trick right?

Wilted Greens over Potatoes

This recipe sounded like the perfect one to accompany the tourtieres because I was already making mashed potatoes… instant mashed potatoes are the most convenient thing by the way! But again, the halving of the recipe problem got to me. I was doing SO GOOD with only doing half the spinach etc, that when it came time to put in the vinegar it all went to hell.
The outcome was WAY to vinegary to eat. I for one, hate vinegar, so I just scraped the spinach off the tops of the mashed potatoes and didn’t eat anymore. I bet that if I had halved it like I should have it would have taste good. Especially with the little bit of cheddar cheese I just needed to sprinkle on top! Perhaps I’ll try this recipe again, but no one else in the house will eat it, so perhaps I’ll just call it a cookbook failure.

Boston Cream Pie

I’ve been wondering for the past few days why it’s called a Boston Cream Pie. I get that it’s from boston, and there’s sort of cream (okay not really), but it’s definitely NOT a pie! I mean, the recipe calls for yellow cake mix for goodness sake. It’s somewhat bothering me about the name… but it’s somewhat not making a difference. Whatever Bostonians.
I liked this recipe because it allowed me to use cake mix and instant pudding mix. The only thing I really had to make was the chocolate glaze, and that itself was easier that I expected. Quite delicious too! I’ve finally found a type of cake that Rick doesn’t hate… ones with pudding in the middle. It was good and I’d consider making this one again. I liked it more than the chocolate cake I made last week.
