Cajun French Burgers & Austrian Cake

6/1/2017

Only two recipes today, and sorry I missed last week. These posts are going to be getting less and less for the time being as I don’t have the funds to go at the speed I have been. I will still try to do at least one a week, but you know it can be difficult, especially with the nice weather coming. All I want to do is be outside really, plus I’m spending most of my time watching movies for the other part of the website. Just bear with me, I’m not giving up on this challenge for myself.

Bayou Burgers with Spicy Remoulade

Being Memorial Day weekend last weekend, I thought it’d be fitting to make some burgers and do some grilling. I chose the Bayou Burgers and they were… different. First, they contain three different meats - italian sausage, andouille sausage, and turkey. They turned out pretty good, I'm not the biggest fan of sausage, but still thought they tasted good and perfect for Memorial Day. The spicy remoulade was the best part in my opinion, and toasted the buns with butter and garlic powder - oh my so good.
I probably won’t make these burgers again, but will be making the remoulade and using the bun toasting trick from here on out. Yum thumbs up, make it if you’re curious.

Cake Recipe

Sacher Torte

These cake recipes are becoming a bit of a nuisance. They taste okay, but every single one of them is three layers of cake… therefore I spend all this time making a cake only to eat one or two pieces and the rest goes to the trash can. I have got to figure something else out. This one, I even took to a dinner get together but still threw half the cake away. What a waste. The next cake recipes might be a bit altered just a heads up. The Sacher Torte was good, I chose it because it includes apricots, which are good for the spring/summer.
And chocolate because well, chocolate. I love the almonds on the side, though I didn’t love putting them on there. I made such a mess because I’m impatient. The cake was good, and easy since I used a box mix according to the recipe, but I wouldn’t make it again. Thumbs to the side.

German Chocolate Cake

German Chocolate Cake

Another cake can be checked off my massive list of "to be bake" from this cookbook. Today it's the German chocolate cake, and it didn't go so well. First, I missed a step in the recipe. Because it had me separate the yolk out of the egg, I didn't realize I was suppose to use the whites later on in the recipe, so these did not get added. Because of this (which I'm assuming is the reason) the cake does not want to stay together. Now, this mistake does not hinder the taste at all. It is still delicious. I especially like the frosting with coconut  and  pecans!  Making  the  frosting
wasn't too difficult, the only problem I had is knowing how long to let the butter, sugar, and egg mixture heat up on the stove. It said "until thickened" but how much thicker was it suppose to get? I am not sure I let it get thick enough, but I was impatient so decided to mix it with the other ingredients anyway. Again, I still think it turned out deliciously, but not beautifully. I angled the picture so that it wouldn't look terrible, but it truly does. What does it matter though? Thumbs up.

Grandma's Red Velvet Cake

I would have to say that baking is my favorite for the most part. It's fairly easy, as long as you follow the recipe it always turns out perfectly. Because most people make cream cheese frosting to go with red velvet cake, I have never eaten it before. So was pretty excited to make it myself for the opportunity to try it. It was delicious. I don't think I used as much red coloring as the recipe calls for, but I think it still turned out pretty red. Honestly, I'm not sure why everyone raves about red velvet cake. Yes, it was good, but I  didn't  really  taste  that  big  of  a
difference between this and a regular cake. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and assume it's because of the cream cheese frosting that is usually associated with this type of cake. Regardless of having normal icing, this cake was good and I would give it a thumbs up.

Jersey Style Hot Dogs

When I first read this recipe I was like "potatoes on hot dogs?" And yes, it still sounds really strange to me, but it was very good! I changed the recipe up a little bit to make it easier on myself to prepare and probably cheaper at the store. I bought a can of sliced potatoes, drained them, and heated them up in the microwave. Tossed them with minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Then just added them along with the red peppers on top of the hot dogs (which I too cooked in the microwave). The end result was
really good, and I'm looking forward to using the leftover potatoes and peppers to put on top of the rest of the hot dogs in the package. Would recommend this, and if I ever go to New Jersey, I'll be sure to find a place that makes these kind of hot dogs, I'm sure they are way better there than from my kitchen. Thumbs up on this recipe!

Amish Sugar Cookies

I decided last night that I wanted to whip up some cookies, it had been awhile since the last time and I just love cookies. This recipe is the first cookie recipe in the cookbook so I chose this one! The recipe itself was a fairly simple one, most cookie recipes are. It did take a LOT of flour though, thought that was a bit strange. But hey, I've never made sugar cookies from scratch before. Since the directions told me to drop "by the teaspoonful" I literally got out my teaspoon and used that as my cookie size for baking.
doing this made a ton of cookies, thank goodness I have my trusty co-workers around to help me eat them. I thought they turned out good, I wouldn't say they are my favorite thing ever though. Still tasty enough when you want a cookie fix! I'll still give you a thumbs up Amish Sugar Cookies.
