Irish Stew

This is the first time I’ve ever made a stew. Before reading the recipe, I would have assumed this to be a crock pot recipe, since that is what my mom always used to make stew. However, it’s more like a soup recipe, stewing (pun intended) on the stove in a large pot for over 2 hours.

I used beef stew meat instead of lamb, because I have no idea where to find lamb and I went to the story way last minute. Everything else was pretty much the same, I couldn’t find some of the spices (cough cough marjoram) so that didn’t get added. and I did not get any parsley. I think buying fresh spices are just a waste of money, because I cut up a couple tablespoons and then the rest goes in the trash.
With the exception of it taking forever timewise, this recipe wasn’t very difficult to make. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the stew, but it was not bad. After putting the flour mixture into the liquid, I thought it would become more thicker than it did. I cut some corners when it came to the vegetables, Shop n Save had a pre-cut stew vegetable box so that went in the cart. The turnip was pretty good (I don’t eat those typically so I don’t know what they taste like). I had to google how to cut up a turnip since this was my first time dealing with the vegetable!

I wouldn’t make this one again, but it was perfect for our St. Patty’s Day themed Book Club.

Irish Soda Bread
by Erica

This Irish bread recipe was super simple. Now having said that, it took me two tries! Read the directions, folks!

This quick and simple recipe was DELICIOUS and tasted great with the Irish Stew. I already had most ingredients in my pantry, minus the raisins and the buttermilk. It was simple enough to pick up both at the store. You can obviously make your own buttermilk, or you can pick up a half pint at Dierbergs for cheap! I was super excited to find that, one less step!

For this recipe after you combine the dry ingredients you cut in the butter, I have a pastry cutter (that I stole from my mother) that I used but you can also use a fork for that as well.
