Shannon: I must say, this past month has been somewhat stressful trying to fit all these Oscar Nominated movies in such a short amount of time. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that it was still fun and I hope that you all had as much fun as we did. Some movies were great and some were not so great (in my opinion anyway), but regardless of my or David’s feelings on these films, there is no debating that these films deserve every nomination that they are given. First, we will give you a recap of the films watched over the past few weeks, our ratings, and for what awards they were nominated. Then, we will give you both our predictions for the Oscar winners and who we would choose to win.

David's Picks and Predictions

Best Picture - I’m going to say that the Best Picture will go to La La Land, and that would be my pick as well. In a year that is filled with outstanding choices from all over the genre map (okay, most of them are dramas, but still very different films), I think it’s going to be easy for the Academy to choose a throwback movie that is essentially about themselves. I think La La Land was one up at the top of my favorite films, and despite the fact I had a lot of love for Manchester By the Sea and Arrival, I think the overall musical nature of La La brings it to the top.

Best Actor - Yikes, this is a toughy, and overall I think it’ll probably come down to two people. Yes, I know Andrew Garfield was good, as were Viggo and Gosling, but the award will come down between Denzel and Affleck. I personally think Affleck should win, just because his performance was so incredibly harsh. But, I don’t begrudge people who think Denzel should win, because he was awesome. So overall, David - Affleck, Academy - Denzel.

Best Actress - Well, well, well, here’s something. First, I just want to shout out again and say Amy Adams should have been in this category for at least one of her two films (Nocturnal Animals or Arrival). But, in lieu of her for my choice, I would absolutely give it to Natalie Portman. I mean, WOW. I’ve almost never seen a portrayal of someone that is so true. However, I think that Stone will be the Academy’s turn. Too much momentum there.

Best Supporting Actor - Overall, I think this might be the tightest race. There are a lot of choices, and honestly, I think it’ll be a toss up between all of them… besides maybe Michael Shannon, as deserving as I think he may be. My choice for this, if you forced me would be Dev Patel for Lion. Because I think it’s so tight, I think his screen time will push him over into the win for this one with the Academy as well.

Best Supporting Actress - Viola Davis. Viola Davis. Viola Davis. Can I say it again? Viola Davis. She’s the clear winner here. For both me and the Academy. How else could you reward that snot?

Best Director - I’d love for Denis Villeneuve to win this, if only because I think that Arrival was the hardest one to make. He would overwhelmingly be my pick, but I think the Academy will lean towards more traditional fair for Kenneth Lonergan, Barry Larkins, or Damien Chazelle. My choice for them is probably Chazelle, leading to a LaLa Land sweep of most of the big ones.

Shannon's Picks and Predictions

Conclusion

Thanks for joining us for Oscars month. As Shannon stated, it was pretty stressful to track down all the films as the came out, as well as trying to plan when to post and then eventually choose the DFP award winners. I hope you enjoyed our takes on things! Tune in Monday and I’ll try to give a quick Oscar Recap. As always, thank you for supporting DoubleFeaturePreachers.com, and keep sending in your own comments and suggestions!
