Top 10 DFP Posts from 2016

Hello readers! Thank you for continuing to check with us on our movie reviews and sending in all your suggestions. We have had a blast thus far, even though some movies one or both of us have absolutely hated. This is our last post for 2016 and we wanted to do a little something special. Lots of websites and reviewers do a “TOP TEN OF YEAR XXXX”, but we’ve always been a little different in that we review movie and films that are current and older ones as well. Therefore, we’ve looked back on all of our movie reviews for the year and plucked out 8 movies that both of us agreed to love and 2 movies that we hold dear to our hearts. So without further ado, here is our 2016 End of the Year list!

1. The

Edge of

Tomorrow

(2014)

Picture
David: This post was only the 8th one we put up. It’s only fitting that we talk about it, because it was the first one that Shannon and I really agreed on. It has everything I like (science fiction, time travel, Emily Blunt) and everything Shannon likes (explosions, explosions, and some more action). The film follows Tom Cruise on a journey where we continually see him killed, and his day restarts. He’s living a loop, and Emily Blunt helps him with his training. Highlights: Tom Cruise performing his own stunts, per usual.

"After an initial start that was a bit rocky, I fell in love with this film" -David, A

"This movie is pretty great. Full of action, thrilling scenes, and robot suits" -Shannon, Loved It

2. Captain

America:

Civil War

(2016)

Picture
Shannon: Captain America: Civil War was the first milestone we "celebrated" at DoubleFeaturePreachers. It was our 25th post and therefore dubbed the 25th "blogiversary." We went on to do some other milestone posts, but this one paved the way. Being a Superhero movie, both David and I were hooked from the start, watching as our beloved heros save the world. As the Marvel universe continues to grow, I'm sure we will be reviewing more Superhero movies in the future and are looking forward to it!

"I thought there was a terrific mix of action and humor" -David, A+

"Johannson is not my favorite actress, but I am a fan of girls that kick ass" -Shannon, Loved It

3. The

Long Hot

Summer

(1958)

Picture
Shannon: The Long Hot Summer was the first movie older than 40 years that we watched and reviewed. It was great watching an older movie like this. One with an extra long intro credits and with scenes that you can tell don't have any effects (compared to today's movies) and are influenced greatly by the studio it's filmed in.  Both David and I loved this film and I'm glad that were were able to add some older movies to our watch list.

"There’s a reason certain movies stick around for a long time and are considered classics" -David, A+

"Eula Varner's enthusiasm and confidence made me happy during the entire movie. " -Shannon, Loved It

4. Now

You See Me

(2013)

Picture
David: Magic. Intrigue. A mysterious organization full of magicians and illusionists. Now You See Me came during our Sequel-A-Thon, and it was one of the best films we reviewed. Sporting a stellar cast that had interesting chemistry, NYSM ended up spawning a sequel that lost a lot of what made the original great: good performances, an interesting story, and best of all, fun magic tricks.

"Magic touches something that lies deep inside my heart" -David, A-

"They are conning, planning, and executing their plans with perfection" -Shannon, Loved It

5.
 Eddie

the Eagle

(2016)

Picture
Shannon: In August, we decided to do an Olympic Movie Series to show our excitement for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. This is where the review for Eddie the Eagle arrived at your computer screens. This film tells the true story of Eddie, a man who had a dream to be an Olympian. And though he wasn't the best, he found his sport to be Ski Jumping and made his way to the Winter Olympics in Calgary (which is coincidentally the same Olympics where the Jamacain Bobsled Team sparked some publicity). This movie was a great watch because it was both inspiring, entertaining, and funny. The two main characters were perfect and it truly was a joy to watch and root for the underdog.

"One thing that came through the film was the humor, and for me, that was a big win" -David, A-

"Kudos to him on his bravery" -Shannon, Loved It

6.
 The Hunger

Games:

Catching Fire

(2013)

Picture
David: As part of our 75th post celebration, we decided to do a play on the 75th Hunger Games presented in this movie and do Hunger Games week. It paid off for all of them, because none of them are bad, but according to the ratings, this one is the greatest. It combines all of what made the Hunger Games series great - intrigue, darkness, wry humor, and best of all, Stanley Tucci.

"One of those rare sequels that improves upon its predecessor" -David, A

"With just as much action as the first, I love seeing these books brought to life" -Shannon, Loved It

7. The Hunger

Games:

Mockingjay Part 2

(2016)

Picture
Shannon: I remember reading The Hunger Games series, and the last book Mockingjay was definitely not my favorite. It was hard to follow and there was a lot going on. The movie however, was my favorite of the entire series. As the darkest movie of The Hunger Games Saga, this one has Katniss and the rebels taking down Snow and the Capitol. They are in their own Hunger Games as they try to beat a booby trapped city and free everyone in the districts from the awful way the president treats them.

"There was also a lot of emotion in this movie compared to the last one" -David, A-

"I feel like J. Law has her best performance of the Saga" -Shannon, Loved It

8.
 Money

Monster

(2016)

Picture
David: Throughout the year, this site has brought things to my attention that I didn’t know before. One of those things is that I’m a big fan of Jodie Foster’s directorial efforts (well, mostly - I’m looking at you Home for the Holidays). This year she released the excellent Money Monster, which somehow reflected Julia Roberts and George Clooney in real life as much as on film. We see Clooney go from a self-centered gigolo to a man who understands more. The film is tension-filled, but extremely witty. Definitely one of the best movies of the year.

"I thoroughly enjoyed Money Monster and think most people will as well" -David, A-

"This film was full of exciting moments, tension, and comical reliefs" -Shannon, Loved It

9.
 War

Room

(2015)

Picture
Shannon: War Room was suggested to us by a DFP reader and fan so we jumped on the chance to watch and review it. With a title like War Room, your first thought is a war or military movie. We were genuinely surprised when it turned out to be a movie about praying. We chose this movie review for this Top 10 post not because we both hated it, but because of the experiences we had while watching it and discussing it verbally. This movie was so dramatic, that David and I couldn't help but laugh. We were laughing so hard that we were crying. This movie was a joy to review (I even wrote a limmerick for all to enjoy). Thank you reader for the suggestion, it was probably one of the most fun ones we've done this year.

"At least we get to see some SWEET double dutch"
 -David, D-

"Dramatic. Cheesy. Bad acting." -Shannon, Hated It

10.
 The

Witch

(2016)

Picture
David: The one that started it all. Many moons ago (in fact, 129 posts ago! Wow!!!) a friend of ours told us that we should be writing about movies, because we were so different in the way that we described them. Shannon would give short explanations (Hated It, Loved It, etc.) while I would lapse into a long rambling discussion on the aspects of lighting and sound in a film. That dichotomy is what eventually became DoubleFeaturePreachers.com, after an afternoon where we found ourselves (and Ryan actually) heading to the theater to see a movie that critics were raving about: The VVitch. After a discussion (and some beautiful website design by Shannon), we started the site with it as our first movie posted.

"It was incredible how quickly you become immersed in the Puritanical world" -David, B+

"My thoughts the entire show were “WTF?” and “Is it over yet?” and “WTF?”" -Shannon, Hated It

A Special Thanks

Independent Films:
I’d also like to take a minute to highlight all the independent films that we had the pleasure to watch this year. The list is extremely varied, but we really appreciate all the submissions from filmmakers. Please, continue to make these projects, and continue to reach out to us. We want to see double or triple the amount of independent film projects for next year!
