This is the second year we have tried to watch the majority of the movies that were nominated for an Oscar. The categories we decided to stick to are Best Picture, Best Directing, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, and Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

Best Picture

Nominees
  • Call Me By Your Name
  • Darkest Hour
  • Dunkirk
  • Get Out
  • Lady Bird
  • Phantom Thread
  • The Post
  • The Shape of Water
  • Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri

Shannon: I think that Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri will be the winner this year. But I can’t deny that all the films I watched are great contenders… I didn’t get to watch Call Me By Your name though. I would like to see Shape of Water or Darkest Hour win it though since those were my two favorites of them all.

David: If you were to ask me a few weeks ago, I would have said that Three Billboards would be the runaway winner. However, I think that Get Out could be a sneaky contender for the award, and it also could go to Shape. However, this is a predictions post, so let’s just go on record and I’ll say that I think due to the Academy’s award structure, Three Billboards will win.

Will Win:: Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri
Want to Win: The Shape of Water

Best Directing

Nominees
  • Dunkirk, Christopher Nolan
  • Get Out, Jordan Peele
  • Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig
  • Phantom Thread, Paul Thomas Anderson
  • The Shape of Water, Guillermo Del Toro

Shannon: I think this will be a tough decision between Dunkirk and The Shape of Water. But I’ll bet on The Shape of Water winning it.

David: This one is easy for me - through I enjoyed all five of these films, this is Del Toro’s to lose.

Will Win: Guillermo Del Toro
Want to Win: Guillermo Del Toro

Best Actor in a Leading Role

Nominees:
  • Timothee Chalamet, Call Me By Your Name
  • Daniel-Day Lewis, Phantom Thread
  • Daniel Kaluuya, Get Out
  • Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour
  • Denzel Washington, Roman J. Israel Esquire

Shannon: Denzel was really good in Roman J Israel Esquire, but I’m thinking that Daniel-Day Lewis will win this one. However, I’d like to see Gary Oldman win.

David: Here’s an interesting one - you have the always nominated (Denzel), the young gun (Chalamet), the always winning (Day-Lewis), the rogue (Kaluuya) and the favorite (Oldman).

Will Win: Gary Oldman
Should Win: Daniel Day-Lewis

Best Actress in a Leading Role

Nominees:
  • Sally Hawkins, The Shape of Water
  • Frances McDormand, Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri
  • Margot Robbie, I, Tonya
  • Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird
  • Meryl Streep, The Post

Shannon: I think Frances McDormand will win this one, I think I would pick her if I were the judge as well.

David: I’m super torn by this one. I can’t get over how awesome McDormand was in Billboards, shouldering a huge load of emotional support. But The Shape of Water is probably my favorite film of the year, and a lot of that was Sally Hawkins. However, in the long run, my prediction speaks for itself.

Will Win: Frances McDormand
Should Win: *begrudgingly* Frances McDormand

Best Actor in a Supporting Role

Nominees:
  • Willem Dafoe, The Florida Project
  • Woody Harrelson, Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri
  • Richard Jenkins, The Shape of Water
  • Christopher Plummer, All the Money in the World
  • Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri

Shannon: I think that Sam Rockwell will win, and should win.

David: Let me preface this by saying that I’m still surprised that two men from Billboards were nominated here. That being said, this is a no-brainer.

Will Win: Sam Rockwell
Should Win: Sam Rockwell

Best Actress in a Supporting Role

Nominees:
  • Mary J. Blige, Mudbound
  • Allison Janney, I, Tonya
  • Lesley Manville, Phantom Thread
  • Laurie Metcalf, Lady Bird
  • Octavia Spencer, The Shape of Water

Shannon: I think that Laurie Metcalf will win this award. However I believe that Allison Janney should win.

David: Here’s another one with a surprise nomination thrown in there. I did not expect to see Lesley Manville in the nominations, but I also think she’s highly deserving. However, there are really only two horses in this race, reflected below.

Will Win: Allison Janney
Should Win: Laurie Metcalf

All in all, it’s another great year of movies. Thanks for checking us out for your Oscar movie coverage, and we hope to see you again next year.
