Quick Hit: A poor parody of a great game series.
After watching some amazing, hand drawn animation in Spirited Away, I guess it’s only natural that I was going to be disappointed by the next animated film that I watched. But what is most disappointing is that I had to watch one of my favorite childhood video games be absolutely torn apart.
Ratchet and Clank, for the uninitiated, follows a Lombax (kinda like a Fennec Fox) named Ratchet as he tries to join a group of fighting agents led by Captain Quark. He’s a bit of a mess. Eventually, he finds a rejected evil robot who doesn’t quite fit the mold. His name is Clank, and he is as inteilligent as any robot you would expect. Together, they fight an evil corporation who is destroying planets.
The story is pretty much a retread of the original game’s story. That’s not a bad thing, but without the ability to slowly drop yourselves into the world, it comes off as really confusing. The humor is really bad, which is surprising because most of the voice actors are hold overs from the game. That means that Clank and Ratchet, despite feeling like the only characters with any substance, often come off as a bit annoying.
Want to know something else that’s annoying? It’s the fact that every single bit of the CGI in this movie seems bad. Like I said, I did just watch something that was hand drawn, but it seemed especially bad here. Once you get past the looking at the main character, the surrounding world doesn’t seem very well animated. It just seems drab and rushed, like no one ever put the thought into putting together the world outside of the characters that we already knew from the world of the video games. There’s also a variety of scenes that are largely derivative of things that we’ve seen before, but not from the video game. One example is a scene that seems straight out of Star Wars looks just like the pod racing scene.
So, basically this movie is terrible. Whether you are a fan of the video games or a person that has never heard of Ratchet and Clank, I don’t see how you could like this film. I’m giving the movie an “F”.
