Quick Hit: Not enough of any one element to make it worthwhile, and filled with almost all the science fictions clichés. Morgan is a science fiction movie that came out in 2016. It features a group of people that have spliced artificial intelligence with a human baby. That baby grew up, and now is starting to misbehave. The asset is played by Anna Taylor-Joy (The VVitch, Split). There’s an incident that begins the film, prompting Lee (Kate Mara) to show up from the mysterious “Corporate”. Of course, the place that all this cutting edge science is occurring is in the middle of the woods. Let me start with the few bright spots of the film. Anna Taylor-Joy is still solid. Her big, anime style eyes are really effective at portraying an otherworldly quality. She has a pretty good dichotomy with Kate Mara, and I really thought that Toby Jones was good, if underused. I also thought that Rose Leslie was effective as a conflicted behavior scientist. However, most of the movie was really, really bad. There is very little of the movie that seems to make sense. The character’s motivations are consistently unclear, and that makes it hard for any of them to seem like actual people. Along with that, this movie has a script that is just a little bit above terrible. As the film goes, things occur, like Paul Giamatti’s character’s indescribable stupidity and dubious inclusion in the film, that make you question why this film is still going on. No one should ever antagonize an artificially designed fighter in order to perform a psychological evaluation – come on. Gotta talk about the really stupid ending – spoilers to follow. ****************************************spoilers************************************* For real? That’s where we’re at? It’s apparent roughly fifteen minutes into the movie that Kate Mara is indeed a robot of the same type of design. She does everything in her power to channel both the characters from Ex-Machina and Charity from The Matrix as possible. Even if her acting didn’t betray the “twist”, the stupid decisions like having her mirrored across from Morgan would have given it away to almost anyone. It’s unfortunate because there were seeds of a much more complicated twist that lay around the films dredges.
*********************************End spoilers*************************************** It’s not the worst science fiction movie I’ve ever seen, but it’s definitely not one I would recommend. I’m giving Morgan a “D-“. For more on this film, check out IMDB.
