Quick Hit: Incomprehensible madness that has no redeeming features if you aren’t obsessed with Gerard Butler’s menacing glare. When I reviewed Olympus Has Fallen, I wasn’t blown away by it, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. However, when I started to see things about the sequel, I was confused. Because there was really no need for a sequel. And once the sequel started, it was clear… there WAS NO NEED FOR A SEQUEL. This movie is terrible, start to finish. There is just terrible dialogue, little character movement, dull characters at that, a mismatched script, a lazy plot, and even Butler manages to make the movie worse somehow. There’s this ridiculous moment where Banning (Butler) remarks (warning – language) “Go back to Fu**headistan.” I’m serious. That’s in the movie. I don’t understand how Arabphobia can make its way into a 100 million dollar movie. Did no one decide that reading the script before okaying the sequel was a good idea? Anyways, if you want to care about the plot at all here it is. We’re back with Banning and his home boy the President. They have to go to London because someone died. So of course, they go, and there are some Arabs that want to attack all the world’s leaders, and they do some stuff and kill some people. Then of course, Banning has to lead the President to safety. They run around London through dark alleys and broken buildings, and Banning kills lots of people. Despite everything that occurs in this movie, there is remarkably little on-screen gore and violence. This kills (no pun intended) some of the campiness that could be located within the film, and instead causes it to just become boring. If the kills were ridiculously over the top and were shown, we could probably excuse it. However, they even get this wrong. However, this didn’t really even cause me the most grief. What caused me the biggest problem was the fact that there was so much footage of stock extras, stock London buildings, and stock, stock, stock, that it astounds me that they spent the budget they had. It must have all gone to explosives and Butler’s paycheck (he probably get paid by the scowl).
I excuse a LOT in movies. I’m a rather positive reviewer all-in-all. But please, do yourself a favor. Don’t watch this movie. It’s a solid “F”. For more on this film, check out IMDB.
