Immediately we are thrown into the time and land of the Vikings. Young Hiccup (voiced by Baruchel) is the son of the leader. Hiccup is different than the others though, everyone in the village is either training or trained in the defense of slaying dragons. Because of his frustration, Hiccup’s father (voiced by Gerard Butler) tasked his right hand man to train Hiccup and the other young adults to defend their village and help rid them of the dragons.
Feeling as a disgrace, Hiccup shoots his invention (a cannon type thing) at a Night Fury - which is a dragon that no one knows anything about - and hits it. Immediately, he starts to feel bad that he has injured the creature and starts to take care of it… eventually learning that he is training it. The dragon’s new name is toothless. By the end of the movie Hiccup has taught the village to train dragons and love them, rather than be scared and kill them all.
I liked this movie because first of all, Toothless is so cute. I know it’s starting to get old with all the dragons/monsters/etc being portrayed like dogs, but c’mon it’s adorable. After initially being terrified, Hiccup was able to earn the trust of Toothless and use that to learn about the other dragons as well. If you are an avid reader of the website, you know that humor in children’s movies always get to me. I found this movie funny in a lot of different parts.
I would definitely recommend this movie. It’s not the first time I’ve seen it, and I would watch it again for sure. It’s a great family movie I think, I may have to add it to my collection for the future. I’m going to give this movie a “Loved It” rating. I thought everything about it good and entertaining. (5/5)
